The thing about MkII's is that they usually have the same issues that any car thats 20+ years old would have. Once you correct all the half-ass fixes and do all the basic maintainance the previous owners have neglected they are really great cars. Especially if you are lucky enough to get one that was properly maintained to start with.
Parts availability is not a problem at all with MkII's. You can get pretty much any maintainance item locally from Marietta Foreign Auto or cheaper from Adairondack (GAP) or AutohausAZ if you can wait for shipping. Most of the VW dealership parts departments are not very helpful.
