    Default TUNDRA SEQUOIA DIESELs CONFIRMED

    http://www.reuters.com/article/marke...0080114?rpc=44
DETROIT, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T: Quote, Profile, Research) President Katsuaki Watanabe said on Sunday the Japanese automaker will launch a diesel-powered Tundra pickup truck and Sequoia SUV in the United States soon, in an about-face to its hybrid-centred product strategy.

Toyota, which likely unseated General Motors Corp (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) as the world's biggest automaker last year, has repeatedly hesitated to committing a diesel vehicle for the U.S. market, which is slowly warming to the fuel-efficient drivetrain, especially for use in larger vehicles.

"I am happy to confirm that a new clean-diesel V8 engine will be offered in both the Tundra and the Sequoia in the near future," Watanabe told a news conference at the North American International Auto Show.

The diesel vehicles were one way to meet new fuel economy regulations agreed by the U.S. Congress that require a fleet average of 35 miles per gallon by 2020, Watanabe said.

He added that Toyota will also expand its hybrid line-up by launching world premieres of two all-new, dedicated hybrid models - one for Toyota and one for its luxury Lexus brand - at next year's Detroit auto show.

"We will not wait until the deadline to comply (with the fuel economy standards)," Watanabe said. "I have issued a challenge to our engineers to meet the new standard well in advance of 2020."

Toyota, which brought the world the first mass-produced gasoline-electric hybrid, has a goal of selling 1 million hybrid cars a year soon after 2010. In the 10 years since the launch of the first-generation Prius in late 1997, Toyota sold 1.25 million hybrid cars.

At the press conference, Toyota also unveiled a new hybrid pickup truck concept called A-BAT, which stands for the Advanced-Breakthrough Aerodynamic Truck.

Toyota is due to unveil another concept, the Venza, on Monday.

Dont get so excited yet. First off the Dually is hideous... And the motor is entirely too big to be efficent.
The motor is an 8.0 Liter inline six Hino single turbo diesel. Its also an Alison transmission. Next, the dually fenders do not wrap back into the tailights, rather stay stuck out all the way back. Which, does not allow you back up to your trailer. I am a huge toyota person... but dang... this one does not impress me.

I've seen the article about the one you are talking about. This is different. The new diesels are going to be V8, not the giant hino 6cyl diesel that the concept had.

why in the world would that not allow me to back up to a trailer? i cant see around my megacabs hardly either or the ford before that. what would be the big deal about an 8.0 either. the old ford had a 7.4 and i got a wholelot better mpg than my 6.0 ever did. and the new durge is 6.8 liters and it still gets 20 or better like my 5.9 does now. i mean by your math i guess there's no way my 7.0 liter vette with over 500+whp can't get 26 mpg either huh? but it does!!!

sorry if i took this wrong, but it hit me the wrong way

He was talking about the fact that the hino 8.0L is only rated at like 8mpg. Its a commercial engine. I'm sure if that engine ever did find its way into a production tundra, they would have to do something to raise the fuel economy. Toyota needs to just go with the cat C7 engine like they originally were going to. It's a 7.2L 6cyl that makes 300hp and 860 lb-ft torque.

cat diesel would be just stinking awesome. and on the hino, who knows what it would get with a better geared allison and rear end thats not a 6:55 or even lower on a 12-20,000gvwr rated vehicle. the original 7.4 fords were only in school buses, large uhaul trucks.....you get the idea. but then in a 8200lbs dually like i had got 19-21 mpg on the hwy.

like i said maybe it just hit me the wrong way. but towing is what i'm all about to go to races and i live and breathe diesel so i know a lil more than the average guy. not everything, but alot. not to mention, take yota entering the full size market as they did. bigger displcement, best in class hp, and get 20 mpg all day long. noone else in the gas market even comes close especially in their crewcab high hp version. please dont give me i have a friend, the toyota shows the mpg on the sticker. or you can check consumer reports. and i dont even know if i'll buy one, but if it will make ford and chevy step up their games on the mpg, we'll all have greater choices!!!!
