lol. no. if you are thinking that the main bearing cap bolts were taken off with an impact, its not. you have to break it loose in the loosening sequence, then use an impact to take it off. unless you want to unscrew all the bolts by hand. lolOriginally Posted by phatboislim

that happened to a friend in his neon, but he was able to prove via his mechanic that it happened due to water being sucked up into the motor. And his insurance covered him a new motor..

Yeah I know right unless youre not running a bypass valve, and your car is low - pretty much knee deep in water already - then cai + rain should not be a problem. Ive been running mine for almost a little less than a year now, and ive driven through several parts of rivers even and been perfectly fine. I DO run a bypass valve though. It is essential.
ahh man I know how that bs feels. I went through a puddle during heavy rains (abt 3 car lengths long) in August and my car shut down halfway through it. You could see the water in my engine (126k)..it was about a cup full. That engine prob happened @ 5pm, and my car didn't start until 11am the next day. I went out there and mashed over & over, and it sounded like a diesel engine trying to start, however finally it started and I still have the black smoke mark on the driveway from my exhaust. The engine seems fine. I avoid puddles, don't speed in the rain & will get a Mishimoto carbon fiber Short Ram next month.

^^^No offense, but why would anyone drive thru a "puddle" that is deep enough for your engine to suck in water? I understand shooting across a puddle because you didn't see it or it was small. But a puddle that's deep enough to get your engine to hydrolock is not something you sneak up on, right? So why drive thru it? Why not just U-turn and go another way? Hell, I don't tailgate in the rain because I have my turbo intake down low behind the fog light and am worried about overspray mucking up the filter. So I damn sure would freak out if I saw a puddle that could be deep enough to suck up water from.
Sorry guys, but if you can't spend $50 to avoid this or be careful enough not to drive out into a lake.....you will get what you deserve.
it was heavy rains, and I didn't see the puddle until the last second...I couldn't go around it because the one side of the road that wasn't flooded, there was a car right there. so believe me, I've been driving my car lowered for the past 2 yrs and thought about swerving...and the puddle was right there as I turned on to the road. I just couldn't see it until the last second due to the heavy ass rains.

nah made the decision that If I can just spend $20-$50 to fix the problem, then I wasn't going to get the bypass valve. I was only getting the carbon fiber for looks & because it would be short ram. That part has been around for atleast as long as CAI's have been, which is to say that's been around forever. It's very simple to put on and works on a very simple concept. You know how a broken straw doesn't work very good when the break is above the water line? This works using the exact same physics.Originally Posted by hondachik
That bypass valve posted looks kinda crappy though. Doesnt look like its made too good. I have an AEM one and its of great durability, and doesnt look cheap. Heres what I have and love it.
EDIT: Nm that picture he posted is the AEM, but without the foam covering. But you do need the foam to help keep crap from getting in the intake. Dont take the foam off.

BTW, the foam does absolutely nothing until the bypass valve works. Under normal conditions, it does absolutely nothing. It only works when the vaccum inside the CAI is so high that those flaps spread out....as in when the CAI is sucking up water much like a straw. Much like a straw with a slit in it, the liquid will not go up the straw as it normally would. That's how and why it works.![]()

I got my Air Bypass right before I went to New Orleans (which we all know is below sea level) and im glad i did cuz it rain for 5 and half hours on the way down there...
I must have good luck then because I've never had a bypass on my CAI for the past 3 years and the filter sits 3" off the ground, behind the bumper.
One time I hit a deep puddle and my car sputtered, died and turned back on after 2 mins though; I was scurred ..
