Ever heard of Mark Donohue?

No matter what car it is, and no matter what suspension geometry it is (even strut fronts and solid rear), you can make it handle as long as the weight isn't too outlandish. I'd be really, really scared of a well built 5.0 Mustang built for the road course instead of the drag strip.

And nOObs, I didn't take the time to read the whole thread, but is that a 305 or a 350 or...something else in that Firebird? You can never tell what lump someone has dropped in over the years.

it's a 305. not much hp, but it runs, so i'm happy. i just want to do this car some justice. i could give a crap less about street racing or track racing or any b-s like that. i just want that car to be everything that it could be. and thank you for not being a douche like everyone else and playing devil's advocate on this thread. i'm sick of people not being able to fathom that their car could maybe, just possibly get beaten by another car. >_> i hate close-minded people.

auto transmission = for lazy people like me who don't care to make my car shift. i like it to do it on its own.... now THAT'S impressive. lololol
also those auto transmissions were way better than the stick shift they had..hell i believe the IROC-Z ran .4 faster with a auto

and that's why i don't want to make it a track car. i want to make it a drag car. i mean look on the bright side... if you wreck an old "heavy pig" it's no big deal to fix... cause you can just go to a pull apart or a junk yard or if you want to spend a little more money, year one or national parts depot and buy new parts for cheap... if you wreck a miata or something of that nature, parts are EXPENSIVE.
i'm not trying to start anything on this forum... the only reason i have an account here is because of my corolla and a few friends of mine who introduced me to it. anyways... i like my heavy pig of a car, and i wouldn't trade it for the world. even for a miata.

thank you for your support and overall kindness... it kinda sucks when an entire thread forum of guys is attacking a female. cut me some slack guys. i just got into cars about a year and a half ago. i just like to drive fast and learn about cars every opportunity i can get, and once again. i love my firebird. it's the most awesome thing i've ever owned and the fact that i actually paid for it with my own money makes me even more proud to own it.

IT'S A 220HP BOAT ANCHOR. The 81's were the slowest of all from back then. Keep in mind... we are NOT talking about this:

More about on the lines of...
actually my car has never sat in kudzu or a field, it's in immaculate condition for an almost 27 year old car. it had maybe 2 rust spots on it which were about the size of a quarter. the body has never been damaged. no it doesn't have the 455 engine in it, i believe you're thinking of the trans ams of 1979(and earlier) which has the 455 stock. trans am does not = a firebird. don't be fooled. and it's not a formula. it's just a sort of rare girl model of the firebird (81 espirit skybird). now... i'll bet you 100000$ that if i fully restored this car to it's original specs i could buy 2 miatas with the money i made off of it. but that's not what this thread is discussing.
on another note, the first pic is from a 1st gen body style... it's not even the same body style as the second picture.

Well my comments were directed to the original post...

    "93 Miata vs. 81 Firebird-
    Both bone stock.
    ON track not drag.
    who wins?"

    ...so they stand as is.

    .
81 Firebird parts arent that plentiful in junkyards, I used to make my living from classic cars....and Miata parts dont cost me much of anything...but I appreciate your enthusiasm. Enjoy your classic!

Yeah... uuummmm about that bet. If you had that kinda cash, i'd take you up on it. I have yet to find a clean/original/numbers matching 81 Firebird for more than $25k, but that was for a Trans-Am Pace Car edition..... not a base model Furbird.

But, you're saying that after paying a few thousand dollars and then investing a modest $25,000 to restore (using correct parts, and PROPERLY restoring.... not using tubs of bondo and Macco paint), you're goign to have to sell it for about $70,000 to be able to cover the cost of 2 modest Miatas. I'm assuming you'd be talking about newer miatas..... which go for $15k to $20k for a 2004-2005 and new MX-5's can go as high as $30k.

    Yeah, i dont think so.
