i dont really like cross make hybrids
What do you think came in the Porsche 944?Originally Posted by PsychoSquirl

A vehicle is an object made of parts put together for one thing, to enable that vehicle to get from Point A to Point B...it's purpose and how it gets there are the only variables: reliability, ingenuity, handling, speed, power, torque, gas mileage, payload, etc. etc etc. Who cares who designed or manufactured a certain part as long as it reaches the goal of what you want?
They are good cars. My mom had one for a couple of years. It can be a little pricey to maintain but what nice Euro car isn't. As long as my mom had it I can't think of one problem she had with it. It was fun car to drive, it easily out handled my dad's 911 SC. I took it to the mountains a couple of times and had a blast. The only mods I remember on the car were an AutoThority chip and an exhaust (can't recall brand).

?
thats what wikipedia said.... very close relationship. they were started by the same guy. funny how your stance on the subject drastically changed.
i have no idea why Speedminded said that.
guess i was mistaken by what i read about the 924 and applying it to 944
and a corvette motor in a porsche is definitley cross make hybrid.

Sorry, I thought you knew what you were talking about. Obviously I was wrong. They were not started by the same guy. Porsche owns over a 30% of Volkswagen, not a part of Volkswagen.
The 2.5 is not Audi based. All 944 motors are purely Porsche based.
The 924 motors are a different story.
"Porsche, is a German manufacturer of automobiles. It was founded in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche, the Austrian engineer who also created the first Volkswagen"
i guess i misinterpreted that statement.
and i dont know what im talking about, so thats why im asking for input.
are the 951 engines iron block or aluminum?
whats the weak parts of the car?
I got a friend with an 84 944 for sale. It was turboed, but one of the turbos went bad and he just kept it all motor. I dont know much about them. He wants 5. Its clean.
not looking to buy just yet, but thanks
are they interference engines?
Yes. Timing belt must be maintained or you are buying new valves.. Alum block with sleeves. Tranny is the weak point, but only under hard launches or extreme (400+whp) power.Originally Posted by PsychoSquirl
Hate people asking "can the car make 400whp" kind of question. Chances are you really cannot handle a 200hp ones.
chances are that you posted at 4am and need to go to sleep
For the average person, they are definately NOT easy to maintain (timing belt/water pump changes every 30k miles @ $1500 are not cheap). A clutch job will cost about $1700 for parts and labor. Parts are expensive as compared to most $10k cars.Originally Posted by PsychoSquirl
The tranny IS in the back for better weight distribution (50%-50% front/rear).
They are nice cars. Good looks, very reliable if maintained regularly, and they make excellent track cars.
I've owned 5 until now........my current '88 Turbo S just has a larger turbo, fuel pump, injectors, MAF conversion, 3" exhaust, tuning, and made 442whp and 457wtq at 22psi. It's still undergoing some work (I don't have time to do it myself).
Besides a "wide-fire" head gasket and Raceware head studs, it has completely stock internals. That's about $5k in mods. You can spend over $15,000 and get the same results at PowerHaus or others.
This can be done with any '86-'89 944 Turbo. Be careful with detonation (use proper spark plugs, maintain a richer a/f mixture, etc) since the weak link is the head gasket, and it can go quick.
thanks for the information.
i'll definitley look into it if i get bored with my current car
22psi on stock internals? yum
