anyone ever driven/owned one of these? how is it? can they be modded to be pretty damn fast?

I wanted this car soooo badly.
The only thing that held me back was maintenance $$$.
They're already fast, and they handle great. Good luck finding one though.
theres tons on craigslist going from 3k-8k
S2 is an all motor monster...3.0 liter inline 4!
He's after the 951 though.
turbo the s2? hmmm.....

ok stay on topic: we dont need to go the regular IA route of talking about relative stuff to 3 pages later talking about a anthropomorphic incarnation of a giant taco that ****s icecream.
is the turbo 4 banger still pretty torquey? or should i stick with a 6 cylinder mr2/ turbo s13 + bike
i like v6 sound and performance, but i dont want to trade down. havnt even got the v6 mr2 done yet.
guess ill have to test one out.
someone said on a youtube comment "they are easy to maintain". is he serious, what are your thoughts and opinions on that?
are there much aftermarket?
can i make 400whp with $4k in mods?
i heard the transmissions are in the back.... wtf?

As is the usual saying goes, "If you know what you are doing and know what to expect, Porsches are easy to maintain." For example, my dad is the original owner of his 1974 Porsche 914 and the only time he hasn't done his own work on it was when he got the engine blueprinted and balanced. However, he knows every single nut and bolt on that MF'er.Originally Posted by PsychoSquirl
There is an aftermarket for it, and I know that the car can make 400whp (I know a guy who had one), but I don't know about the prices of the products.
Yes, the transmission is in the back, it gives the car practically a 50/50 weight distribution.
UGA: Everybody is laughing at us this year.
It's a 2.5 liter Audi engine up front with a torque tube leading to the gearbox in the rear.Originally Posted by PsychoSquirl

For the average person, they are definately NOT easy to maintain (timing belt/water pump changes every 30k miles @ $1500 are not cheap). A clutch job will cost about $1700 for parts and labor. Parts are expensive as compared to most $10k cars.Originally Posted by PsychoSquirl
The tranny IS in the back for better weight distribution (50%-50% front/rear).
They are nice cars. Good looks, very reliable if maintained regularly, and they make excellent track cars.
I've owned 5 until now........my current '88 Turbo S just has a larger turbo, fuel pump, injectors, MAF conversion, 3" exhaust, tuning, and made 442whp and 457wtq at 22psi. It's still undergoing some work (I don't have time to do it myself).
Besides a "wide-fire" head gasket and Raceware head studs, it has completely stock internals. That's about $5k in mods. You can spend over $15,000 and get the same results at PowerHaus or others.
This can be done with any '86-'89 944 Turbo. Be careful with detonation (use proper spark plugs, maintain a richer a/f mixture, etc) since the weak link is the head gasket, and it can go quick.
944s are front engine right?

Don't worry about torque...yes they were four bangers, but they were HUGE four bangers.
N/A 944 was a 2.5 liter
The Turbo had a 2.7 liter
And the S2, as mentioned before, had a 3.0 liter.
Or with an automatic transmission.

Yeah, I know that's a shameless plug, but I need this thing gone. I'll pretty much take ANY decent offer at this point.

951's did not have 2.7's. 2.7's came in the newer 944's.
ALL 951 (944Turbo & TurboS) had 2.5's
The 2.5liter 8valve Turbo created more torque than the 3.0liter 16valve N/A on the S2's. The S2's motor is base concept of the 968's motor but without the forged internals and without the variocam system.
With 4k in parts, you can have a 350+rwhp bolt-on 951. check out www.lindseyracing.com . Those 3-8k 951's you're seeing are mostlikely the pre-1988 951's. Those have 217hp. The 88.5 and above are called Turbo S's, which make 247hp. Both cars have the same displacement, 2.5liter.
Someone said something about boosting the S2. Easier said than done, but when done, it is monsterous. The S2's 3.0 comes stock with a 10.9:1 compression. Very high for an N/A motor, but that's how S2's can give pre-88 951's a run for their money on road courses. The 951's have 217hp, while the S2 has 207hp. The 951 puts out more torque at around 240ish @ 3500rpm i think and the S2 is only at 208 @ 4000-4500rpm. But if you look at the S2's torque curve, it's very flat. There is a guy in australia right now that is slowly cranking his boost up on his S2. It's a completely stock S2 motor with 90k miles. Has a stand-alone, K26 turbo, 951/S2 hybrid intake manifold, 951 turbo plumbing, etc. and the car is over 400rwhp.....@ 10psi. 100% gain @ 10psi is good. Stock pistons have held up for 15k kilometers now he claims.
He has spent a little over 10grand. If you're really interested, he will give you his intake dimensions, his fuel mapping, timing curve, etc. if you ask and are serious.
With that said, a popular motor/head combo is a 3.0liter block mated with a 2.7liter 8valve head off of the newer 944's. Turbo'd 500+ realiable HP easy and daily driven.
