Glare problems can be best solved by narrower aperture. Your camera already tried to fix it some, the aperture seems decently narrow, that's why the light is star shaped, a point of each star is where 2 aperture blades meet. The best bet would be a good lens hood (or a hand above the lens in baseball cap fashion) and shorter exposure times. A fill flash might have helped a little bit (a weaker-than-usual flash designed not to actually light the shot itself, but match the ambient light in the background to provide an even looking exposure. good luck next time.
