Beyond purchasing the vehicles, resources are expensive. Maintenance, tires, gas, insurance, safety equipment, entry fees, travel, medical expenses and so on. I think you seriously underestimate the cost of consistently being able to afford all of those things (especially to the point where you become good at it).
Unless someone is living at home, I dont see $12 an hour cutting it for that kind of lifestyle.
if you watch the at the end, you'll see an advertisement posted for his metal fab business. My friend in highschools yard looked like that.... 4-5 dirtbikes 4wheelers ect... bunch of random motor toys..... his dad worked at coke and his mom was a substitute teacher, hardly rich.
