Most young kids join a gang because of a few things. First, to fit in, and next, for protection. Protection of what? I dunno. I've stayed in some pretty rough places, and not once have I ever wanted to join a group of guys only to possibly bully another group of guys. And it only gets worse after that. Only advise I got for young idiots like them is just keep it real with yourself. Everything else follows.
