    I can't tell if he downshifted too many gears, and locked the rear, hit gravel, or just panicked and locked the rear brake.

    It was gravel. I read the story posted by the filmmaker on another board a while back. Later, QD.

    gravel may have been the cause of the rear coming out, but the reason he crashed was because he paniced and hit the brakes mid corner. Thats a no no....def a rookie mistake....he should have let off and tryed to correct or low sidded and ditched the bike so he didnt hit the wall with it or at such high speed
