    cleaned the MAF and the throttle body today. runs better and no longer wants to stall when coming off the gas, but still stumbles on hard acceleration.

    volvo engine bays were never pretty that old.. lol i used to have one. thing was safe like a tank... and had boost.

    the guy i got the car from said that a "newer" engine had been installed about 30k miles ago. i have no way of confirming it, but the engine bay does seem to be fairly clean considering the age.

    santascruz- not sure of the exact problem, but it seems fuel or ignition related. the guy i bought it from said it needed a new fuel filter. from researching volvo forums, it sounds like the transmission is more than likely the relay, but it could be as simple as changing the fluid and filter. you can get volvo parts CHEAP at http://www.eeuroparts.com.

    just took it for a drive on the freeway for the first time. the transmission does shift, but doesn't want to do so until you get up to 4k rpms. i was doing 70+. it shifted into 4th and was cruising just fine. as such, i think the transmission just needs to be flushed and it should be all good.
