Not to argue but:
NHRA Pro Stock uses 5 speed clutchless transmissions that you have to shift.
NHRA Funny Car and Top Fuel use a clutch system that slips at first then engages depending on what the crew chief sets up. That drives the 3.20 final drive.
A lot of sportsman racers do use the auto as it is easier to be more consistant, so I guess both points can be valid.
