The main benefit of buying without a contract is that the phone is unlocked, so travel is a breeze when changing chips, no need to call and 'beg' ATT for the unlock code. Also, a no contract phone will not have all the stupid and useless ATT crap app on your phone. I hate it that for example, on my Sony Ericsson, one of the buttons is a one-press way to go online to MediaNet, and it is 'conveniently' located in such a way that it is very prone to 'accidental' presses, so each accidental press ends up costing me 0.02 cents or something...
