    - Create folders?
    - Delete useless shortcuts to programs..

    Make it fancy:
    - download rocketdock http://rocketdock.com/download
Put the folders you made on the rocket dock for easy access... Make the folder in something other than desktop if you want it off the desktop..

there is another program out there that you can hide your files on the desktop, the only way to see them is holding a key combination that you create. Its free to, I cant remember the name.

Delete shortcuts you don't use, put the ones you use most often on the task bar.

Or, find that one program that allows you to have your desktop shortcuts show up on your desktop at the push of a hot key....I think with their latest update they even got a cool optional UI that pops it open all sleek like and then disappears when you release the key combo.

This is the program i use, its super easy to set up and you can put the icons you use the most and get rid of the rest. Makes for a really clean looking desktop.
