    what is this black plastic thing on my USB cable and what does it do? also, can it be removed, and how would i go about removing it?

    Those are usually a loop to reduce magnetic interference. Leave it on or buy another cable

    Yeah what he said. It's mainly there to reduce interference. It's not a necessity but most OEM manufacturers put them on there.
