    Default MACHINE SHOP REFERALL!

can someone please point me in the right direction...
Right now I'm thinkin Precision near the airport, heard good things. They quoted me something like 600$, Money shouldn't really be a big issue, right now I want to find a place very trustable and timely. I am removing my balancer shafts so I am going to need it completely balanced

the worx, meaning hot tanking, bore, press pins to piston, cut deck, lighten/surface flywheel, fully balance, etc

and maybe surface my exhaust mani.

also my forged pistons are a wierd bore size (.031) i'd prefer for it not to be the shops where they just punch in the numbers and it bores, some shops actually use the piston itself and make it purrrfect.

Please post up contacts because I want it done right the first time

right now im leaning towards precision.

    w00t!

they are right down the street from me, quoted me 565... I dont care much for the price difference, but the guy sounded really competant on the phone.

And his turn around was 3-7 days, which is great.

This place is in my 1st choice now... I have about another week to decide though.

I am really worried about whoever balances it.

what i meant was, if i HAVE to do machine work locally, i take it to Scots.

i have never been satisfied with anyone else locally. My number 1 choice is DFE Enterprises in Jacksonville Florida, but he is busy an take some time, but hes the best machine work i have ever seen, did everything to my block

They can balance too. I have a set of Mustang heads up there right now, as well as my Brothers Subaru motor.

yeah its always good to hear when a machine shop does the smaller shop practices like actually requesting the pistons while machining to check everything.

the only reason i was going for precision is because it sounded a little more legit (its near the airport) They have a professional ass answering system lol and an engine dyno, etc... Just seemed "corporate"

but I think its final, im goin with Ball, and the price isn't bad either.

Be sure to post up your experience when finished. It's always nice to know who does quality machine work as it seems to be harder and harder to find a machinist who's #1 priority is the quality of their work. Good luck on the build.

    Scots Machine Shop
    Ball ENgine

    Stay away from:
I have seen VERY bad things from Eagle. a friend of mines motor was put together with the thrust washers installed backwards

KMS, biggest rip off in atlanta. EXTREMELY POOR MACHINE WORK, WORK ETHIC, WARRANTY etc, seen PERSONALLY 6 motors come out of his shop that i had to tear down an they ranged from mis machine GSR girdle to way out of spec bearing clearances an mains an thrust washers put in backwards. everyone knows of marios motor that had a piston rip through the rod.

my motor is already at ball, should be back soon... hopefully.... Hopefully they dont do a price changeup on me when its time to pick it up... I would have preffered to pay in advance, but its all good.

Well yeah now that the thread has already been resurrected and what not

Ball engine, They are nice guys and what not, but they did pull that on me.. i still go there all the time, but whatever,, They did a good job so it didn't matter. They also charged for "disassembly", I figured that would have went under "assemble", but I guess people bring in their blocks and all their parts in boxes and bags? to get assembled there. So they tacked on another $80, i believed. I already had the block there and i'm like you know what forget it, its going to take me another day to take all that shit apart and load it in the car again and drop it off... so i'm like whatever go ahead.
I have a good memory when it comes to numbers and a good few of the things I got they quoted for... they inflated the price when it came time to pay.

For example, I believe bore and hone came to 115 (what he quoted on the phone), He wrote 125 on the invoice... But whatever... its all in the past now. He did the same thing for balancing the rotating assembly.

i believe after all that was said and done it came to 865 (still have the receipt) ... but I did add a few extra things though so its all good. Still not too expensive, but more expensive than I previously thought.

LOL, they are a machine shop, in case you didn't know....you are supposed to take them things disassembled. As far as the Bore and hone goes...its 10 bucks...if that's not what they quoted you....you should have said something.

Sounds like a good experience to me.

Machine shops will waiver some, especially if the motor is not diaasembled.

i learned that my first motor i ever built. If the fucking main caps have bolts in them, expect to pay $40-80 more.

they want to do machine work, not tear the motor down.

but $800ish is about average for a QUALITY machine shop job.
