    Default radar oppinion/help

ok, now befor anyone says anything... i know that radars cant help you %100 or anything but i do about alomst 200 miles a day of driving and id just like to kinda get a feal for when a cop is by or what not. so ive narrowed it down to 2 radars.... the valentine v1 or the escort solox (which is just a cordless 8500 if im correct) if not correct me. but what would you go with and why. or if you know of a better radar, throw out some suggestions. thanks

    V1

Escort is crap. Supposedly there was some one-sided testing done on them back in the day that said they were better than the V1. They are not.

V1 or 8500 are the best.

I have both and have used both for years.

The V1 is better because of distance, rear antenna, and arrows.

The 8500 is less expensive, comparable distance, and can be used with the laser shifter.

Radar "jammers" DO NOT work. The ONLY one that remotely works is not a jammer but a shifter and it costs over $1k, but it works.

Bel is owned by Passport too, so their high-end unit is basically the 8500 with a different case.

Don't buy anything but the V1, 8500, or top unit from Bel (forgot the specific number, but I think it's the 945 or something like that).

Yeah like Jaime said, I've owned both and you cant go wrong either way. The V1 is nice cause it shows you the direction but it gave a lot more false alarms.. the Passport is nice especially with the ZR3 shifter. I'd say whichever has the best deal I'd go with that one.

well i can get the v1 new for about 350, or i can get the 8500 for 300? so its really not that big of a price difference. which one would yall buy?

V1 has the directional display and I wouldn't buy anything else. I got my V1 stolen and I bought another one. Once you get used to it a regular detector seems crappy. Both times I bought my V1 it cost $400 and I ordered it direct from V1. My friend has the passport and both of us prefer my V1. I didn't have any more false alarms with it than anyother. If you turn on the middle filter it isn't any worse than any other detector.

Price held equal and nothing else is going to be added??? The V1.

How can you get a "new" V1 for $350 when the only place to get a real "new" one is from Valentine directly and it sells for more than that?

Yall have to understand that the V1 does false more, but it's because it's more sensitive (i.e. longer distance detection when it is real) than the others. As someone already said, there are modes of filters you can use on the V1 to keep falsing to a minimum. For example, you can take out the X band out all together. That's where the majority of falses come from and almost no police use that frequency anymore.

Again, the advantages of the V1 (by itself) vs the 8500 are small but definite. The V1 is longer detecting, has directional arrows, counter, and rear facing antenna. The 8500 is cheaper, but lacks the arrows, and from first hand experience lacks the same field of view on laser than the V1 does (therefore it will leave you unprotected comparatively).

Now, you connect the 8500 to the ZR laser shifter and use them in combination, that's the ultimate protection IMO. But you will also have $1500 invested when you're done too.

If Valentine comes out with a laser shifter, I'd buy it and be very confident. If Passport ever prices the ZR reasonably, I'd buy that too and be just as confident.

Compared to other units, the V1 and 8500 (and it's Bel clone) are head and shoulders above everybody else, period. It's all a matter of your budget and personal likes. I've had both for a long time and use them in different cars. I use the V1 everyday, and the 8500 in the wife's car. I don't feel naked against radar in either one. On long trips, I will take the V1 out of my car and use it though......if that tells you anything.

V1 also spazzes more but you have 3 different modes to use it in. One black certain bogies and wrans you if its a serious threat, the other accepts all bogies and I forget the other one. Something the other people have forgotten to mention is the fact that it counts how many things are making it go off. If you are going home and it goes off at the same spot every day, you will begin to ignore it but if a cop knows where the place is, he can sit there and radar knowing thet you will probably iognore it. Valentine tells you and if there is more than usual, then you know...

ok, well heres an update... ive borowed my buddy's 8500 and ive come to the conclusion that it sucks... ive been pulled over with the radar on for speeding and he got me with a radar... not a lazer, i had cops come up on me with no radar warning, i past cops radaringpeople with no warning till i was about 20 feet before the cops... now gratned it did save me a few times. which im very happy for, but all in all... i think it sucks. and also with the false warnings... dam, it basically went off on every door and security sensor. thats my final thought on the escort 8500

i personally liked it, but it just gave off so many false alarms and such... for the price of the radar and everything, i was thinking highly of it and i was very disapointed in the end. i think im just gonna go ahead and get the v1??? but the 8500 just gave off so many false signals, i just started to ignore it at times... and on l'vill suwanee road and 85... before the overpass... i got all types of signals from the chevron passing it. i was like wtf? who knows

I think you had either A: a bad RD or B: your buddy hadn't turned off the X band and hence all the 50 million falses.

Reason I say that is because as I said in earlier posts, I have both and my 8500 falses LESS than the V1. I have the X band turned OFF on both units too. Only backwoods Barney Fife PD uses X band anymore, I don't think ANY in Georgia do. X band is where the majority of falses come from, therefore turning it off will greatly diminish the falses.

This is where the arrows and bogey counter make a difference. If you can visually see the arrow point forward, middle, and then rear as you are driving by and don't see anything and the signal is weak......you know it's a false alarm. In the 8500 you merely will get the hit and then it goes down in strength until it goes away. So the whole time it's going off you're slowing down because you're not sure if it's a false or not.

I don't understand how your friend's 8500 didn't warn you in time, because I've never had an issue (except with Laser) where my 8500 didn't warn me in time.
