Default Tire selection for a weekend strip machine.

Whats the method for selecting a wide (DOT approved, not a full slick) tire for a street/strip machine? Obviously it has to fit in the well but how does the wheel width limit the tire width? Like, when does the tire become too wide for the wheel? Also how does gearing and applied torque alter the selection?

Just for instance lets say I have a vehicle with these specs: (if it helps demonstrate choosing)

    RWD

    ~4400lbs with driver

380ft/lbs @ 2100 rpms (so easily within stall range)

3.73 gears (and some sort of limited slip, not a locker though)

Rim width can be 8 - 12 inches

Reading about vteckidd's problems at faceoff with too much tire has me wondering whats the way to pick one.

    TIA - Dorin
