Default 2009 Mugen NSX RR Concept

At the 2009 Tokyo Auto Salon (TAS), Mugen surprised everyone by unveiling this extreme NSX. Called the RR, it comes almost four years after production of the regular model was cancelled.

The biggest modification was made to body with new carbon fibre and aluminum panels that both widens and lengthens the standard NSX body. Attached to this is a new fixed rear wing, front splitter, rear diffuser and hood scoop.

As one would expect the powertrain and chassis were also upgraded but at the show the engine was not functional. Mugen said that the RR was strictly a showcar to celebrate their upcoming anniversary.

Am I the only one that thinks it looks awesome except for the (even though it's functional) roof/rear-windshield scoop for the engine??

It isn't functional in the way a roof scoop should be used.

I'm thinking the roof scoop is functional...it's not a rally car.

I like it all except the exhaust exits...I LOVE the front fenders!!

I finally found a pic of what i have been on about!

    F1 Technical: Cooling

Just above the driver's head there is an air inlet that supplies the engine with air. It is commonly thought that the purpose of this is to 'ram' air into the engine like a supercharger, but the airbox does the opposite. Between the airbox and the engine there is a carbon-fibre duct (1) that gradually widens out as it approaches the engine. As the volume increases, it makes the air flow slow down. The shape of this must be carefullly designed to both fill all cylinders equally and not harm the exterior aerodynaimcs of the engine cover, this all to optimize the volumetric efficiency.

The following picture displays the uncovered rear part of the championship winning Renault R25. The element marked with (1) is the airbox that guides air into the engine (2) to be mixed with fuel in the cylinders. If is therefore not an aid for cooling but simply a requirement for the engine to function.

Make the hood scoop a little less "shark fin" and it'd be just ok in my eyes. Seriously, that hood scoop is rather distracting... re-post or not.

I guess that fact that it doesn't have a direct way of feeding the intakes. Yes, that whole gets air in and out of the engine compartment but it could have been made to work more efficiently.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHH LOL, I was calling it nonfunctional all along because I didn't see a direct feed straight to the engine like it should be (pic you posted of the F1 car) I never even considered it's just throwing air into the engine bay That's why I was calling it nonfunctional. We are on the same page. Now I get what you have been saying.

Exactly. Any race car would aspirate the engine that way. The actual phyics of what happens once the air enters is above my level of understanding. I read an F1 forums debate on triangular openings vs oval ones and it became math formula after math formula.

But yeah, i should have been more direct in explaining that the external intake has an Airbox under itself. This tunnel feeds the engine directly.

This is one from a Jordon from a couple years ago...It sits under the engine cover aspirating the engine and a whole lot of other stuff like reducing intake pressure and slowing the air down.

I'm sure the car would look incredible in race livery but may be a little too radical for a street car.

Is anyone else baffled by the engine, is it longitudinal?! The intake manifold seems to be turned 90 degrees from any NSX i've seen...

    *edit*
Upon a little research just discovered the JGTC NSX engine was longitudinally mounted, learn something new every day! I've always wanted to build a replica JGTC NSX and paint it a solid color...just think it may be as radical looking as this one and might be too much going on for a street car. I'm really curious how much room, as in the exact dimensions of the engine compartment.
