    Default 2200 watt amp

    i have a 2200 watt amp and was told for the power wire from the battery to the amp should be either a 6 or 8 gauge. does that sound correct anyone with any input would be appreciated.. thanks in advance

    What brand is it? Because an amp capable of 2200 watts should have no less than 0 gauge terminals going into the amp. Otherwise it is an amp that far over rates its power output. Also what are the size(s) of the fuse(s) on the amp?

    the amp is a friend of mines.. but on the front the brand is directed and on te front it says directed 1100d.. on the back it says 2200 watts and it has to 40amp fuses

    thats a damn good amp and will defiantely do the 1100wrms it advertised. Run 1/0 awg wire for power and ground if it is a run of more than about 5ft. Less than 5ft you will be fine with 4awg. 8awg is an absolute no no, I dont cre if the run is only 3".

    ok so use 0 or 1 gauge is less than 5 feet and a 4 or 6 if more.. its going in a jeep.

    the smaller the number gauge is the larger wire. Alos make sure to use good wire. Becuse of the rising cost of copper alot of companies are simply using more shielding and less wire in their wire. One of the best wires I have seen are the wire from KnuKonceptz.com. True awg wire and VERY flexable.

    KnuKonceptz wire is extremely good, and reasonably priced as well. My buddy picked up enough to completely rewire his Suburban for cheeap through them. I'm a huge fan of those Directed 1100D's, if you decide to sell it shoot me a PM I'd definetly be interested.

    yea we ended up using a 5 gauge.. it worked well and it sounds good now.. why does everyone like directed so much? i have never even heard of them until yesterday when my buddy brought the amp to me. what is good about them?

    its not that they have a greatproduct line.
    but that amp and its little bro are solid amp and a great deal per watt

    If thats true, then you really are using too small of a wire for the length of run. What brand wire are you using also? Brands like Raptor, Lightening audio, and audio pipe are also cheap wire and to avoid raising their prices with the cost of copper, they are using less wire and more shielding.

    I did a quick test a while back with some cheap wire compared to good wire. I dont remember the actual numbers, but a 10ft strand of lightening audio 4awg had higher resistance than a 10ft run of Stinger custom pro 8awg.

    nah i meant 5awg.. it was late at night so we ended up going to walmart and just picking up one of the kits they had. and they didnt have any 4awg kits left so it was a 5awg. and it wasnt my car and he didnt want to pay alot so i didnt question it really... i know it is not the best quality but it worked and he is happy with it

    Noooo......you need some wires that are way bigger. At least four gauge if you just want it to work without straining.

    sorry to thread jack but what about the wires from Circuit city?? the Tsunami? Is that a decent wire? The wire did looked a bit tad smaller then the older 4awg when I got it but never knew about companies putting more sheilding and less wires thing.

    Tsunami Pro is good stuff. Their Raptor line is a bit more budget....

    Less quality, and less cost.

    those amps are great and stable to really, really low impedances. definately 1/0 AWG for that amp, to be safe. I like the new Stinger HPM stuff and the Kicker Hyperflex
