    Default What computer you use?

I was wondering what kind of computers everyone is using and what they have done?

I am looking at buying a desktop because my laptop does not have enough in it to do the work i am doing. I was looking into getting a Dell XPS 720 but I keep reading that Dell has been ripping people off and the preferred customer account paying with credit is a scam. Alienware runs with the same bank as dell and pretty much has the same problem.

Im running autocad and proengineer. I need a quad core processor to run ProE with ease, but i am coming into problems with finding a nice computer without all these damn hassles.

    i have a toshiba laptop.

but if you want a good desktop, do what i did, i had my dad build it for me. you get the stuff you want. and usually you get a better price.

some computer stores will build it for you.

i got like a desktop that would of been over $1000 or so and my dad build it for less than $700.

i had a 300 GB in a computer 4 years ago. and that was a lot back then... i think? most people had like 75 GB or so.

well i am going to be spending anywhere from $2000-3000 cause this will be my work deskptop that i will be using for some time. I am an engineer and do alot of design work.

I am looking into possibly building one but i am also lookin into HP right now also. MY laptop is HP and runs great.

What does everyone think about vista? I heard it can actually mess up your computer at times.

If you are going to be doing the kind of work I reccomend you go with nothing less than A Lenovo Think Pad. The are quite posisbly the sturdiest normal laptop you can buy. It has a stainless steel cage behind the screen,Stainless Steel hinges, and an air bag like system that deploys around the hard drive in case you should drop it really hard from like 100ft. The were built by IBM but Lenovo bought the rights a couple of years ago. My dad has had the same one for the last 6 years and has absolutely no problems with it whatsoever. I personally wouldn't buy anything else after this now. As far as Vista goes. everyone seems to have mixed reviews about it but almost all of the kinks have been worked out of it. The key to making vista run the way it should is having the right amount of Ram. I run it on mine with only a gig. While it sufices yes it takes forever to boot up. You really need 2 gigs to run it at its full potential. Hope this helps

EDIT: To give you an Idea price wise.

    My Setup

    Lenovo R61
    15" screen
    Bluetooth
    Wi-Fi
    60gig hard drive
    CD/DVD RW
    1 gig of ram
    Windows Vista Busines
    $1150

of course you can add the extra ram and stuff but if you end up ordering from them direct it will cost you. I suggest buying something similart to mine having them add a larger hard drive and then going and getting the ram upgrade yourself.

I think Dell actually bought Alienware a while back, not 100% though. Personally I hate Dell and I will never own another one. If it were me I would get a nice Mac Pro, but I know you can't since you have to run Autocad and ProE. I ran into those same problems last semester at school, I had to bring my Gateway desktop up to school so I could run Autocad and SolidEdge.

So I guess I would recommend Gateway, I've never had any problems with them but I have no idea what kind of performance they currently offer.

I have a Velocity Micro. They cost a little more but the customer service and tech support more than make up the difference.
