minor cpu help

alright i got 2 pc's a older compaq evo, that im using now.. runs great i had it for awhile. And i have a gateway 300x es2, it runs, but runs ****ty due to spyware and being owned by my gf's grandmother who just goes online and clicks on everything... well she gave it to me. Its newer the the compaq i use, and has alot of slots to upgrade and all that good stuff

Put my HD out of the compaq into the gateway pc, and run both HD's, but use the HD out of the compaq as the master. the gateway has 2 slots for multiple HD's one master one slave. i know that i put the compaq into the master and the gateway into the slave.

BUT, i have been told to put all the drivers from the gateway onto my compaq HD before i do that.

finnally the quesion...

ithink i know where to get the drivers form on the HD, but not 100%... so do i just copy all the drivers from the GW HD to the CQ HD, and be set? they both are runnin Xp..


anyhelp would be great... since NEMESIS (mr.redhat) doesnt talk!

if you're planning using the second drive for extra storage, then you just need to format the drive and install it in the bay, it will be picked up, you may need to install drivers on the other computer for the drive, but it SHOULD pick up on XP.

edit: I just reread what you said. Basically: do a complete format of whichever drive you want to use as the slave. Once you install the other one in the machine, it should automatically pick up that there are new devices, being that it's in another computer, and you should be able to install, at least in safe mode, all the drivers you need to get it to operate correctly. I would recommend, however, before you take the drive out that you remove all the devices from the current computer via control panel.

I did something similar a couple computers ago...had two computers running 98, put the hard drive of one into the other. My solution to this was to do a straight reinstall of windows 98 onto the new drive, and just delete the windows folder off the original drive. I'm not sure how well it would work for XP, though.

Anyway my best advice would be to make an attempt at really cleaning off the gateway drive and letting it play master, or, alternately and if it's within your budget, getting a third, bigger, newer hard drive and installing windows onto it. kinda a fresh start and allows for further expansion.

[edit: i guess i didnt really answer your driver question. I don't think just copying them would work without many issues, but i don't have a better idea, either.]

Burn it onto a CD first, or if you have the room, copy it onto the other drive, reformat, copy back, and reformat the second drive. If it's as gunked with spyware as you stay it wouldn't hurt that poor gateway drive.

thinking more about it, i would say reformat the gateway's drive (do you need your girlfriend's grandmother's porn collection?) and then install windows on it. Make it the main boot drive, stick drive number 2 in there, and delete the windows folder.

i dont want to get rido f the data on the compaq HD, i dont care about the gateway one..

im just tryin to figure out the best way to get what i need of the gateway HD and put it on the compaq so i can run it. once i get whatever i need off the gateway drive i was gonna clear it.. i dont have either Xp discs..

Now, RIGHT before you take the HD out of the compaq, go into control panel and remove all the devices from the compaq computer. LMAO...all the drivers for like video card, network card, modem, CD/DVD drives, any hardware, basically. There really isnt much to mess up if you do it that way, worst case you have to boot in safe mode first to install all the drivers.

Or should i install the HD into the GW as the secondary and delet the drivers form there, than reinstall the CP HD in the master slot and let it take over?

Yes, most of the stuff will stop working like modem/net card etc. , but you'd still be able to use it well enough to finish up. You may be able to just take it out and put it in the other one and have it pick up the new parts to install without removing the ones that are on there, but I'm not 100% how well it would work.
