Exclamation Mt.Fuji 20th anniversary celebration of the Ferrari F40

The legendary Ferrari F40 supercar has celebrated its 20th anniversary in real style this year with a series of very spectacular events held across Western Europe and North America; and now Japan has got in on the act with an event held at Mount Fuji.

When it was introduced in 1987 (with its production of 1,315 units running through to 1992) the F40 was the fastest, most powerful and most expensive Ferrari sportscar ever to come out of the gates of Maranello factory.

The 'no compromise' F40 with its potent 2.9 litre V8 twin turbo engine has since then entered Ferrari 'folklaw' and its 20th anniversary celebrations this year, running alongside the marque's 60th anniversary programme, has seen a string of events being held to honour the timeless supercar. One of the celebratory events was the showing 40 cars that Ferrari GB and the Ferrari Owners' Club gathered together at Silverstone this summer, the red coloured cars then parading round the famous circuit.

As the year draws to a conclusion it is the turn of Japanese owners to come together this month with a spectacular display of these awesome machines. In superb weather conditions on 2nd December, no less than 36 F40s, including several examples of the F40 LM race-bred version, gathered for a trip down the expressway to Mount Fuji, delighting onlookers who had turned out to see this glorious cavalcade in motion of what is regarded as Ferrari's most evocative modern day sportscars.

Wow, that's an impressive gathering. One question, do these people think that the F40 only came in red? I mean, I understand a red Ferrari is classic but damn, have some diversity, they also hold off black yellow and silver pretty well. Could you imagine being at the meet......."Ok guys, this was a lot of fun, but I have to be going......... umm which one is mine again?"-starts trying keys-

    History
The F40 was in the most literal sense designed as the successor to the company's GTO supercar, but the project's meaning ran deeper. At ninety years old, Enzo Ferrari was keenly aware that his life was coming to an end, and was somewhat disappointed that Ferrari's dominance in international motorsport had faded somewhat over the years. As a result, Enzo wanted a new pet project put into the pipelines, something that could remind the world of the company's capabilities as a manufacturer as well as provide both a competitor to the Porsche 959 and come to be his masterpiece; the company's impending 40th anniversary provided just the right occasion for the car to debut. The plan was simple: create a vehicle that combined the company's best technologies into a no-frills sports car that would come as close as possible to being a full fledged race vehicle while still retaining the necessary equipment to be a street-legal product. It was the last car to be commissioned by Enzo himself before his death.

It was intended that there were to be 400 F40s made, all painted red

    His choice you say.

    well lets see,
    1. Red is Italia official racing color
    2. Rosso Corso - if you dont know im not gonna tell you!
    3. Ferrari exists to race F1, and even though the shade has changed the 125s and the F2007 still wear RED.

well I understand Ferrari is a brand of heritage, but I personally think that a move like that is a little too much pride of practicality. I've never been a historical person though, to me things like "true to the times" and "harking back to" just seem more like limitations.

Well a little quick math says 2.51% of all the F40's made are pictured here. And with the debut MSRP sitting at $400K there is $13,200,000 (at least...) worth of automobile sitting there. Goddamn.

Lemme put it in terms you might understand, just like all ferrari's should be red, the 787b should should always have the color scheme of green and orange with a white dashed line separating the two.

Rosso Corsa is the red international motor racing colour of Italy. Since the 1920s, Italian race cars of Alfa Romeo, Maserati and later Ferrari and Abarth were (and often still are) painted in rosso corsa ("race red"). This was the customary national racing colour of Italy, as recommended between the World Wars by the organisations that later would become the FIA. In that scheme, French cars like Bugatti were blue, German like BMW and Porsche white (since 1934 also Silver Arrows), British racing green etc.

The colour was not determined by the country the car was made in, nor by the nationality of the driver(s), but by the nationality of the team that entered the vehicle. For example, a yellow Ferrari 156 was entered and driven in the 1961 Belgian Grand Prix by Olivier Gendebien from Belgium, scoring 4th behind 3 other Ferrari 156 painted in red, as they were entered by the Scuderia Ferrari itself, but driven by Americans Phil Hill and Richie Ginther as well as German Wolfgang von Trips.

These national colours were mostly replaced by sponsor liveries since 1968, but unlike most other teams, Ferrari always kept the traditional red. The shade of the colour varies, though. Since 1996, the Ferrari F1 cars are painted in a brighter, very orange "Marlboro Red," to adjust for color balance on television screens, although a darker shade of red made a return on the F1 cars at the 2007 Monaco Grand Prix. The original Rosso Corsa appears almost dark brown in some television shots. In recent years, these traditional colours have resurfaced in some cases, eg. the green Jaguar Racing F1 cars.
