Use the polygono lasso tool to select the painted areas (ONLY the painted areas and zoom in a lot so you get a nice selection, as smooth as possible). Then the next step is how I do it (some do it a different way, but i find this way to be the most realistic and effective). Go to image --> adjustments --> gradient map. This keeps the current gradient (IE the shadows and highlights), but changes the colors. Then you are going to want to have pure white all the way on one end, either the right or left of the gradient depending on what your computer is set to. Then pick a color for the darker areas, you can drag the window of the color picker over to the side and just move the curser around the different colors and see what looks the best. Some will tell you to play with the hue and saturation, but i have always found that to provide a very unrealistic color scheme.
