    I also rent/use a Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII and Nikon 400mm 2.8 everytime I go to the track.
Can't really say if you NEED longer than 200 or wide angle without knowing what you shoot the most.
I just shoot family shots right now. I'm no professional.
I have access to a D80 also, and it will be getting the 50mm f/1.4 soon, and maybe a Sigma 150-500mm.
I just like the effects of the wide angle. I'll probably just by the new GoPro Hero2 for my wide angles though. My Hero works pretty well, but the new one is even clearer.

How is the build quality on the Sigma?

85mm 1.8 is the perfect budget portrait lens. If you don't want to spend the $ on that then the 50mm is hard to beat.

I have owned a few Sigma's and the build quality is fine but the len's can be hit or miss. I liked my 10-20 but my 70-200 was super soft.

i like the bigger body of the sigma 70-200 because i think it feels better in my hand's. i am a big guy and it dont feel all light and unbalanced. mine is a very sharp copy but chad is right, i had to go threw two of the to get a good one.
