I would suggest doing lots of research online and going to a store and physically holding a canon and/or nikon to get a feel for whats good for you and your budget. With that said I am selling my nikon d5000/lenses pretty cheap cuz im trying to switch to canon. The camera is only 6-7 weeks old.

You need to figure out what your budget is first.

    Below $500 - Get a full featured point & shoot like a Canon G11
Below $1000 - Get a used consumer DSLR like a Rebel XSi
    Above $1000 - Get a new DSLR

The smart thing to do would be to get the point & shoot. You'll know when you've outgrown it.
