first attempt at daytime flash

this was taken on mother's day of my wife and daughter and is the first time i used flash during the day. let me know what i need to do or not do. this was a SB600 w/ gary fong light sphear.

seems like it was a little to straight on.....good attempt though. were you using a bounce flash?

cant really bounce it off the sky but it was a sb600 straight on with a gary fong light sphear.

Honest question, though. Why would you need to use a flash in the daytime? I can't tell a flash was used at all in the picture. Later, QD.

i have been reading about using flash in the daytime and seen some cool results. one of the reason's i seen was a guy taking picture's of his daughter in front of a sun se at the beach and without flash, she would have been really dark so he used flash and it evened out. thanks for the "couldnt tell a flash was used" comment. thats what i was going for.

no i gotcha. but here is an example of my 430exii bent at about 45 degrees or so.



QD, depending on where your shooting at and the position of the sun and time of day. you use a flash for a fill flash to decrease the amount of shadow that can build up on a persons face. there are many reason for a flash during the day.

it fills in the shadows... you can get amazing images from back-lit situations with a flash. you can also even out the lighting... (the background is really bright, so if you light your subject well your background will be more visible).

you can tell there was a flash used by the spots in their pupils. (soft box fixes this)

yeah. i had forgotten to but my stofen box on the front of my flash when i took that pic. still came out good though.

my daughter is 9 and is 4ft 11" and my wife is 5ft even lol. the both look funny standing next to my 6ft 5" ass lol.

i would have liked a better back ground but this was last minute and was taken in my yard. thanks for your input chadd, always a honest answer from you.

I am shameless with my strobe on sunny days. Most of the people that I shoot wont know to pick apart an image that has flash spots in the eyes so I go full blast without a diffuser and straight on... that is until I have a subject with Glasses, then it is another story.

Tech: on shoe 430 exII with a 50mm 1.8 on a crop body. no filter on the flash. camera mode in "p" lol. color correction as usual in RAW processing.

the trick is to find a view you like, find a tree to create some shade, let your people relax and understand that you are going to take a few shots so no stress... oh and fire in groups of two.

Looking at your picture I feel like your subjects are looking up at you too much (you are tall right?). Their posture is a bit uneasy (have them give each other a big hug if they are close, and then get them posed for the picture) get them relaxed. Shoulders back and chin down head slightly forward defines the face better (this will take some direction from you to tell them more of less... more if they have a bulging neck and disappearing chin...less if they look like a turtle)
