Let's not be quoting ken Rockwell. Seriously.

Also, only reason for the smart ass reply is that there is seriously one of these threads every week or two. Search is your friend.

yeah but he'll spend like $400 for body and a decent lens to get started. the D40 is unbeatable for a noob. it's still fairly new and easy to use and produces really good shots.

    i just sent him this....

This camera has only 2789 actuations.
No hot or stuck pixels and my test for dust shows a spotless sensor. (see last image). The lens that came with the kit was used for about a week before he bought the 18 - 200 zoom. The 18 - 55 looks new.

    Here is what is included:

Nikon D50 camera in excellent condition
Nikon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens in as new condition
    Nikon strap
    Promaster UV filter
    QuickPro Training DVD
    Original kit box
All documentation that came with it as original
US users manual complete with notes penned in appropriate places
If you speak Spanish there is a users manual without notes
Unused warranty cards if you feel that might actually pan out for you.
    USB & Video cables
Flash shoe protector & viewfinder shield
    Promaster universal battery charger
    Promaster second battery
1 GB SD card also included

The only thing I can not seem to find is the body cap....doesn't mean it is not here, I just can't find it yet.....

$340 paypalled & delivered to your door.

you cant beat THAT for a starter nikon DSLR!!! toss a $100 50mm 1.8 at that set-up and you got gear with great potential

The only time limitations would arise is when shooting a moving subject. I have an AF lens mounted on mine right now and I have no complaints.

yeah thats true, manually focusing really wouldnt be that big of a hassle unless you were shooting a racing event or wildlife photography.
