Are you a student? I went through livebooksedu. Google it. Easy to use flash content/flash uploader all that. Simple. 99 bucks for 13 months + the URL which I got on godaddy for 10/year.

Not much up on it right now, but whatever.

for those that have a site.....
    1. was it built from scratch?

    Yes
    2. did you buy a template?
No, but a lot of people do.
    3. did you make the site yourself?
    Yes
    4. who do you host with and how much does it cost you yearly?
    3shost and ~$120 a year

    5. how many images are you allowed to have up?
As many as I want, but I don't bother uploading big photos to my site anymore... not when flickr, photobucket, picasa, and imageshack are free
    .
    6. do you have to know HTML to add/delete photos from your site?
Yes, but there are scripts I could put on the site that would automate the process if I wanted.
The photo gallery on my site isn't a 'photography' exhibition to show off stylish photos. It is a gallery so that people can see photos of people&places I have come into contact with throughout my life.

Whats funny, is that I actually did sell a photo off my personal site without even intending to. (I would have given them the photo for free if they'd asked.. but they threw money at me so I took it!)

please post up or PM me, i need to be educated on this stuff!!! any help is GREATLY appreciated!!!!

What are you going to use your site for? Showing off photos? Trying to sell services as a photographer? Just sharing pictures with people?

Everyone and their grandma has the cookie-cutter flash template site "<insert name> photography" with the roll over menus and what-not. Not my cup of tea, but whatever... figure out what you want to do with your site and then you'll be one step closer to figuring out what kind of site/hosting will work best for you.

Just be warned that maintaining a site for yourself is a chore... which is why the free services that automate the process (upload photo, put caption, done) are so common among enthusiasts.

good stuff. thank you. i plan on using the site for future clients to look at. when people ask how to get intouch with me and want to see a portfolio i want to be able to send them to a REAL site not my bullshit myspace page.

im pretty sure a template will get done what i want to get done. i dont need or want anything wild, just a clean simple page, maybe with the option to buy prints.

    1. was it built from scratch?

Yes, it was built from scratch.

    2. did you buy a template?

No, the person that designed the website used a current template they had and tweeked it some.

    3. did you make the site yourself?

No, friend from another forum that we created did it.

    4. who do you host with and how much does it cost you yearly?

I believe it is around $105 for everything site, hosting, site address, etc. GoDaddy.com

    5. how many images are you allowed to have up?

I don't think it is limited, but I only put up 2 photos on the website.

    6. do you have to know HTML to add/delete photos from your site?

Adding/deleting photos with HTML is very easy. In my case, I do not have the software to do anything to the website, so I have him make all the changes.

good info, thats not a bad price. i just need to be able to add/delete photos myself cause i shoot weekly and i dont want to bug people about changing photos sometimes up to 3 times a week and wait for them to get around to it.

I just blog all my stuff. If you're somewhat tech-savvy, you'll figure it out. --not necessarily a super cool website but it gets the message across. --good luck, Chad.

    1. was it built from scratch?
Yes started as a student project, then changed A LOT over time.

    2. did you buy a template?
No. But, there are a huge amount of templates out there. And you can EASILY find one for free. + Nobody said you cant modify the template. If I were to do another site, i would definitely take this route.

    3. did you make the site yourself?
Yes. Like i said, began as a student project then changed over time.

    4. who do you host with and how much does it cost you yearly?
1and1.com!!!! Best ever IMO. There are a LARGE amount of different prices on there.

    5. how many images are you allowed to have up?
Every photo I have ever shot and returned to the owner is on my site. But its based on the storage size, not actual amount of pics.

    6. do you have to know HTML to add/delete photos from your site?
Not exactly, CSS took over the world a while back, but you will most likely have to remember and enter the exact HTML lines so you can put a personal log in and file share or whatever they are called.

If you aren't trying to look insanely flashy and just trying to get the product to the customer, then you DON'T have to spend an awful lot of money. Plus, if you by the cheaper domain, then hit your bandwidth limit, you can just upgrade at that point.

    Edit!!!!
Flickr also sells an uploading and preview program/thingy you would put on your site. Super clean and easy, from what I have seen anyway.

    Edit2!!
SimpleViewer Pro is also another version of the same program. Once again, super clean and easy.
