Default Thinking about a new camera.... might switch to Canon!

So, when my car sells and I finish a co-op term I will have a bucket of cash that is already burning a hole in my pocket. So I am looking at new camera gear.

The idea of being able to take HD video really intrigues me so at first I wanted the D90 from Nikon. I see that capability on that camera as a gimmic and only a minor step up in photo quality.

The D90 may not be part of my consideration anymore. If I choose to stick Nikon I will probably get a D300 and a new lens or two.

However, I am quite tempted by the Canon 5D mark ii. The full HD-video is quite impressive (http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=Zu3bQqCTAIw) and is something that I would like the capability of. This is quite expensive, so I would have to limit my lens collection to begin with to just one.

I am trying to research all of these cameras and these possibilities.

    I welcome any insight.

if you did get the 5dmk2, you can get a 50mm 1.8 that canon makes for $80, maybe less. that lens is my practical lens, keeps some pretty good sharpness for a low cost... that's what i'd start with.

I hope you get that camera though, that'd be awesome.

well, I could probably afford to go with that and a 17-40 L lens. That would be enough to get me by for awhile. I should be able to get some decently wide shots at 17 being a full frame sensor.

I am wild about this camera man, its definitely the direction I am leaning.

If you get a 5DMkii don't get the EF 50 1:1.8, it's a great lens, but on the body at least opt for the EF 50 1:1.4 USM good bodies show flaws in cheap glass more than cheap bodies. the 50 1.8 is GREAT for it's price but it's still a plastic toy with slow autofocus and such. I'd reccomend as a 5D mk ii starter the EF 24-105 1:4 L on a full frame that is a perfect field of view and for an L series lens, it's reletivley cheap 6 or 7 hundred althuogh on top of the 5D mk II that price may be a bit demanding.

I'm sorry, I heard "i need a cheaper lens" so i responded with a cheaper lens. the 1.4 goes up a good bit in price. and now that you said 17-40, i agree with you on that kustom. I haven't heard anything bad about that one. plus it's some excellent glass.

right but the 1.8 is really cheap. i have one too, but i doubt i would rock it on a 5dmkII.

heres the lineup as far as your minimal dof

    1.4- a pretty nice lens

    1.2- definitely the primo

and i think this would be quite rad to have on the video aspect, and the photo side too...

That 1.4 is a possibility, but there is no way I can afford to purchase a $1000+lens on top of the 5D mark ii.

    I'm not ballin' that hard!

If I did it would be my only lens I need something wide no question. If that 17-40 goes wide enough and covers a crisp undistorted focal length, then I'm, sold. Besides, I need the leftover money to cover the "pro look" battery grip and I need a bag for all this gear and a memory card

Well a 17mm on your nikon acts as a 25.5mm. If you get the 24-105 I mentioned, it'd look wider than 17 on your Nikons, and still have the 105 telephoto. I think you'd be disappointed by the 40mm limit on a full frame. It'd be the equivalent of a 27mm on your Nikon. I think the 24-105 F/4 L is a good option to start with on a Canon foundation.

That's a great point. That seems to make more sense. Not to mention that is some beautiful glass, that 24-105 is L series, right?

OK, first off the 5D mkii is a bad ass camera no doubt. However, the D300 will kick its butt in low light. Second, DO NOT JUDGE THE 5DMKii HD VIDEO OFF OF REVERIE. That video was shot with a ton of L glass and primes. Do a search and you will see what lenses he used. Some are no longer produced. Third, I am not sure how much you have invested in Nikon gear but it might not be fully worth it to switch depending on how much is invested.

Ask yourself this, how often will you be using the HD to its potential? Will you be shooting any sports with the 5Dmkii? What are you mainly going to be shooting?

If you really want to go canon then the 5Dmkii is a great camera. The 24-105 is a great lens as well and offers a better range than the 17-40. Really comes down to your budget and if you can afford the glass to go with the 5D.
