Help me with photography! Thanks in advance

Ok so I got my DSLR. Canon Rebel XTi. I only have the kit lens. Let's say I am inside my home and just have normal lights on and want to snap a quick picture of my dog who is sitting or playing on the floor? Not with a tripod.

What preset on the dial should I use? Then where should I put the settings?

Would love it is one of you guys have AIM or GoogleTalk and can help on the fly

Well I am open to help from a guy that charges 100K for a wedding to a guy that just got his camera. Being open minded has yielded me my best results in everything.
