thats a man called a lineman. he checks and repairs electrical lines. when hes 6 ft away from the lines hes ok, but when hes 6ft within the boundaries of the lines he must use a metal pole to transfer electricity from the lines to the helicopter so he doesnt get electricuted.

    Damn, beat me to it.

He's a Journeyman Lineman. That suit he's wearing is actually metallic. The pole does transfer electricity to the chopper and the suit.

I work for an comercial/industrial electrical company, but I'm no Electrician.

they do it alot in cali, transmission lines are not joke, i use to work on them, if you pulled over to watch he has a 4ft metal rod he hangs out to energize him and the heli, the arc just jumps out at it from around 4-5ft away and is so bright you cannot look at it, they also have attachments that clip on the heli to trim trees, pretty cool stuff, he also has a cradle and clips, he can actually use it to clip on the transmission lines and it looks like a hammock and it has rollers, just pulls himself from one pole to the next...you can't get health insurance though, and one out of every two dies. pays in the 200k's annualy

1 out of 2 does not die....what misinformed backwoods person did you hear this from?

my brother-in-law has been an aerial lineman for years, he has health insurance, he even has life insurance, and iirc only one person has died that he knows of while on the job....its a risky job, but by taking the proper precautions you should never have a problem

and yes he does get a supplemental hazzard pay while on inspections and repairs
