Default Fun cartoon project you can try(Photoshop)

We are going to cartoon your car(or whatever)

First start with a picture of a car (or whatever you'd like) here is my Rx-7.

Then in Photoshop, creat a new layer. Press "Ctrl. + A" to select the entire picture, then press "****f + F5" to fill, choose white and hit enter. Bring the layer opacity to about 40% and select the line tool(fill pixels, line tool, weight:1 mode:normal antialias checked). Then proceed outlining lines of the car in black onto the white background using the transparency as a guide. Think tracing paper. After you have finished, return the opacity to 100%, your picture should look like this.

Creat a new layer if you want, or start painting on this layer. Use the magic wand to select your car's body panels, and the fill tool make your car a solid color. Then, using the polygon lasso (or any type of selection you prefer) start to make selections near reflections and shadows and fill them with shades darker or lighter than the base color(lighter for highlights, darker for shadows). You can use the "shift" and "alt" keyes to add to or subtract from a selection respectively. After all the tweaking is done, you can make cartoons like this.

Enjoy this method, and post your attempts here!

holy jeeeeezus that is difficult, manually tracing all the lines takes forever. im not real good at my photoshop so it was extra hard. im not gonna lie, i gave up after about 3 straight lines when i was trying to make curves. this will be a project i'll have to work on for a while

That's the hardest stage, and 81911SC, I'll do your car, I can't say when, but probably tonight or tomorrow, just PM me a decent sized pic (maybe a something in the 1000 by 800 pixel range give or take) of your car to work with. the whole process takes from 3 to 5 hours, or about 6 hours for your first one.

I've never actually used the pen tool. I am self taught and didn't bother trying it out. The method posted here is just what I use. What does the pen tool do that's different from the pencil tool?

You can save a lot time using the pen tool, just make a rugged out line then you can add anchor points and make the curves easy.

    yeah, pen tool ftw.

and actually, this project would be better using illustrator, using a vector based program will yield better results.

Well it's just a fun howto that I put together with other stuff I had seen done, I was just trying to be helpful and wanted to show off my work. People always ask how I do it so I included it WITH the pictures. Also, if any of you guys liked this how to I am thinking of putting up a few more, so let me know if it was helpful or fun.

Here you go, from 9:45 to 1:05 a total time of 3 hours and 20 minutes.

    Start with 1 Porsche:

Lay down a sheet of digital tracing paper:

    Trace:

    No more underlay:

    And color!:

Maybe, the picture is a little small and kind of a bad angle.

Well the thread does have the words "You can try" in it. Maybe someone inspired by my writeup will do it, if not for a week or so, I'll get to it, but after doing that 3 and a half hour of labor on the Porsche pic for free(I've done it for a company edited frame by frame for a 36 frame animated gif for $300 before so free is just something you get when you catch me on a good day) I'm really not in the mood to do another cartoon for a while. The gif before and after just for fun by the way(I made both):

    Before frame by frame editing:

This was such a pain in the ass, imagine my 3 and a half hour labor on the Porsche, redone 36 times (once for each frame)! After PITA editing:

Not bad for a 17 year old eh?
