    Default New camera...

I just got myself a Canon Powershot A540. Paid $110/shiiped for it(brand new), a 1 gig SD card, case and battery charger pack with batteries off of Ebay. I have no idea on how to use any feature of this camera. I wanted to learn about ISO and apertures and white balances and all that crap. So advice is necessary. I don't care if there is critiquing as I am no pro and I admit to not knowing anything side from aiming and shooting.

This first set is just trying to mess with features; such as widescreen and setting shooting modes. The last two are changing between regular shot(last) and foilage shot(next to last). Later, QD.

The first pic is supposed to be on a setting where you can have B/W pics and keep some color in it. The next two show again the regular shot(above) and foliage shot(below). I got this camera mainly for all my roadtrips just to have a decent camera to take pics of all the crap I'll be seeing on the road. Later, QD.

Same here. Shit's nice. I'm not caring much about JaimeCBR-esque pics, but wanted a decent camera for when I'm on the road. Later, QD.

I agree. There are so many variables to fuck with that I don't know how I can learn them all.

Preciate it. That's the wide screen shot. I don't know if it's just the camera or my shooting that has my pics not looking "vibrant." I aaume that I can make the pics even better with this camera if I knew how to mess with the different settings? Later, QD.

The 2nd and 3rd picture look good. Nice depth of field and good subject matter.

for water shots, you can try to extend the shutter speed for a more "smooth" running effect.

just keep in mind that post processing is equally as important as the camera itself. the powershot line from canon is more than capable of taking good shots

play around with the preset modes, but eventually try using av/tv modes and then M once you think you have everything down.
dont take anything i say srsly. its the interwebs.

Av = aperture priority mode, lets you choose how wide or how closed the aperture is on the camera, useful when you want to play with depth of field (which is how much of the picture is in focus)

Tv = shutter speed priority, lets you choose the shutter speed for a particular shot, useful when doing shots like long water shots or rolling car shots

these modes will automatically choose the other option for you (ie: in Av mode, the shutter speed is chosen for you, and in Tv mode, the apterture is chosen for you)

ek, I just found the underwater mode and it "uses an optimal white balance setting to reduce bluish tones and record images with a natural hue. The exposure is regulated to use the flash as little as possible." I just found the case that I use this with. Lolol. Later, QD.

good stuff... arent underwater cases quite expensive?

AiAF is Artificial Intelligence Autofocus, i think... the camera focuses on what it thinks should be in focus, doesnt work all the time though so youre probably better off using Flexizone.

powershot cameras are amazing for their prices. Picasa is a good simple editing program, it just has the basics but its a small program so its a lot faster than waiting for CS3 to load up.
