It's his body. Why should you give a fuck what he does to it? If he thinks its cool then thats all that matters, and its not so much about how it looks but about the memory of his friend. He's not gonna be looking at it thinking "I'm sooooo cool", he's gonna look at it and think of his friend, but I giess that never crossed your mind did it?
