I really just need to get photoshop. Help, please

I've got a basic black/white photo in bmp format that was done on a computer. I wanna see if someone can make the white part of it just a darker shade. Basically, I'm using this as a backdrop on a myspace page with white lettering. The white on the background makes it hard to read, so I wanna dim it down ALOT. Like to the point where it's almost equivalent to that of a watermark on a paycheck...where you can kinda see it, but it doesn't obstruct the view of anything...if that makes sense?

try using GIMP its freeware similar to Photoshop, gives you the chance to make it look exactly how you want..
