Default New pics with the D40...

So, I just bought my D40 this weekend, and these are some of my first shots. I love the camera, but I could use some comments and critiques if you guys don't mind!

beautiful work! I really like the b&w of the wheel hub I assume used the on-board flash on the coke bottle? (judging by the angle of the shaow) I'd suggest taking a white envelope or something and directing the flash upwards or at a slight angle away from the subject...you'll might be suprised by the results. Then on the first pic maybe try getting slightly lower and/or a little less of the grass in the foreground and more of the tree & roofs on the buildings. :my2pixels:

Wow! Thank you so much for your input! I will definitely try the white envelope idea. That was my only real problem with that picture... the flash appears way too direct for my taste. Thanks again for the advice!!!

A [clear] plastic "dixie" cup works well too! Just slip it upside down over the flash and you have a homemade diffuser If you really want some crazy effects, use colored cups (the clear colored ones that is, not the ones that are white on the inside and a solid color on the outside)

You're gonna start to hate me if i keep going! :-p Try not centering your subjects and see how it turns out -- that's why i like the wheel hub pic so much. Being symetrical with certain pics is a plus but always remember thirds [1/3's]. Take the flower and wheat/grass pics for example, if you split the photo up into three segments each of those pics would have the subject in the center one....since the wheat is leaning towards the right maybe back up a hair to get the top then put it towards the left side of the photo.

No, not at all. I love criticism, especially in a subject I'm just starting out in. That makes sense about not being too focused on making the picture symmetrical. I never really thought about it that way, but you're absolutely correct. The hub pic is my favorite as well.

A plastic cup huh? That's a really good idea!!! It's funny sometimes how the simplest things can completely change things. I'll pick some up at the store this weekend!

Centering the subject draws your eyes to the center of the pic, instead of the entire image, if that makes sense.

yep a cup, one just like this works, guess it would be a SOLO cup and not Dixie [think those are the paper ones] I'm no cup expert

OR cut the bottom out of a rubbing alcohol bottle. It will normally slide over the big flashes perfectly too if you ever get one of those.

Lol.... I won't hold the fact that you are no cup expert against you.
