need lens recommedation

I have a canon xti and i only have the kit lens (18-55mm). i'm leaving out of country- korea, Philippines, maybe japan or china. beautiful cities/scenary etc. so i want a decent lens to carry around and take all the pics i could.

what would be best for this? a lot of city shooting, mtn. scenary etc., (mainly outdoor shooting). I'm looking to spend around $3-500. im relatively new to this hobby so i don't know what's out.

Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II SLR Lens -52mm

Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 USM IS
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM (no IS)

I'm thinking about getting the 50mm ($70 + f1.8, can't beat it) and one of the two above or alike. Any other recommendations?

Can't go wrong with the 50, I have one and it does come in handy especially for the price. For a decent carry around lense look at a sigma or tamron around a 28-75 F2.8. Can pick one up for around $400. Good carry around and the 2.8 will help in low light situations. The 28-135 is also a decent carry around lense with good range but is limited with the F stop only going to 3.5 at 28mm.

A.P. I am looking for a lens that would be good for action shots. I have a Cannon Rebel XTI, I also have the kit lens, and my wife is wanting more zoom and the ability to capture the 'movement' of the cars when I race in auto-x.

hate to hijack the thread but I hate to sunk that much money in a lens that will not fit my needs.

Congo, it really depends on what your budget is to be honest and the worst conditions you think you will be shooting in.

Ones off the top of my head:

Canon 70-200 f4L if you are going to be shooting mainly in daylight or good light situations. This will run you around $550 to $600 depending on where you get it.

Sigma 70-200 F2.8 This is a great budget lense that a few on here get great results out of and runs depending on where you get it for $750-$850 depending on where you get it. Use this in moderate to low light situations.

Canon 70-200 F2.8L This is the lense that canon users want. Great color reproduction and awesome glass. I would recommend this over the Sigma if you can afford it. This one will run about $1150 or so. Use this same as the sigma.

If these are still too much for you then you can pick up a 70-300 USM F3.5-5.6 for around $150. It is not ideal for low light but it will give you the extra zoom you are looking for. I started out with this lense and still use it to shoot races.

Another option that I have never used but it could work is the Canon 28-135 IS (Image Stabilization) F3.5-5.6. Great zoom range and would be about what you would be shooting on track or just walking around. This lense runs around $350-$400 but is not that great of a low light lense.

There are tons more out there but this was just off the top of my head not knowing what budget you have.

With autocross you wouldn't need to shoot less than f/4 anyways, most likely being f/5.6+ depending on how bright it is and 200mm is plenty of length for cone dodging. :my2pixels:

Another thing to remember is that because of the sensor in the xti you will have to multiply the mm by 1.6 to get the correct zoom for your lens. That 70-200 will actually be a 112-320mm.

It's a 1.6 crop factor, there is NO magnification...it's the exact same zoom, just a smaller portion of the image captured compared to full frame bodies. The only differance is full frame camera's capture more of the exact same image, lenses don't magically change their characteristics when attached to different sensor size bodies...

i have the canon 50 1.8 and the 70-200F4L and both are really impressive lenses for the price, you should be real happy with each of them for the most part.

Sorry, I used the wrong terminology. This is something to keep in mind for anyone that has preconceived notions of what type of zoom they need from experience with previous cameras. Of course there is no extra magnification but with the crop takes a smaller portion of the image than a full frame camera which in turn acts as zoom. Kind of like digital zoom on a point and shoot but you don't lose quality and you can't turn it off.

Cant go wrong with the IS 28-125. A VERY nice lens. Wish i still had mine...
