So as the title says I'm curios to know your experience with various brands of radar detectors. Which brand and type is the best for the money? I'm looking to spend around $150.
thanks![]()

Wow very nice. Might get one of those when I have something worth putting it in. How do the Cobra 12-Band Radar Detectors hold up. This would just be for simple daily driving no night runs etc.
I had the Cobraaaaa lalalalalalalala! it worked Very well. only time I got a ticket when I had it was when I had the windows down and the radio loud.(I couldn't hear it going off)Originally Posted by NewGen33

Cobra is the best
$150 that's it? hell u might as well save that money and use it to pay ur first ticket![]()
Do some research on the net.
There have been extensive testing of just about every unit under the sun at one point or another by one publication or another. Just be careful about false advertising and biased reporting.
You won't get the "best" protection for the least amount of money in this realm of the world. You can get decent protection, but it's all relative. It's really about buying the best RD YOU can afford. Just keep in mind how expensive tickets are when you get one, and measure it up against that.
If a ticket is going to cost you a ton of money, then you only have 2 choices; Either A: buy the best RD out there or B: don't behave stupidly.

P.S. Just FYI, only the top of the line Cobras are even remotely worth looking at....if at all. I've had a ton of different radar units, including the cobras, and there are clear cut winners out there and clear cut losers. Can you get by with it? Absolutely. Would I trust it? Probably not most of the time, and therefore it defeats MY purpose for having one in the first place. But everyone is different and their comfort levels and driving styles differ as well. So weight it up by using performance vs budget, rather than the other way around.![]()
Thanks for all the input everyone. I'm still in High school so $150 is about all I can dish out right now. My high school is in the boonies and the cops love to pick us off when arriving and leaving school. Thats my main reason for having one, since theres no point in racing a 4runner. It will just be used for my 30 minute drive to and from school.
Thanks again![]()
im using the escort passport 8500 and compared to my old cobra the range is amazing. I picked up a cop last night from over half mile away on city streets. I got mine used for 175 so just watch the for sale section here.
thanks for the advice man
If you just slow your ass down, you wouldn't have to worry about spending money on a radar detector.
yea im in high school too..and the cops there suckkkk..
cobra +1
Passport SR7 with Shifters.
I have a cheap radio shack detector and pick up cops and construction signs from about half a mile away if the road is flat. Just get a cheap one and a laser jammer, because even a valentine 1 wont get you out of a laser ticket.
How's that help?Originally Posted by koukis14

I don't recall me ever saying that I speed when leaving or arriving at school. I would just like to have a better awareness of when a police officer is near me. No one is perfect and stays below the speed limit at all times. Plus with how strict they are now with your License I don't want to take a chance.Originally Posted by GIXXERDK
