well, my dog is with me all day long, so i take him out all day long. and i definetly tell him good boy and pet him when he goes outside.
he's outside well over 10 times a day.

Have you tried treats to reward him? That may help...
The crate may be too big (for now). Sometimes if the pups have too much room they will still potty in their crates. Is there a way to rig the crate so he only has enough room for him? I would only let him have water at certain times. Like if you go to bed at 10pm, take away the water at 8pm. Also, run the crap out of him before work & maybe he will take a long nap in the morning. Then run him at lunch, so he will nap in the afternoon. Pups usually pee after naps & playtimesOriginally Posted by Killer

yeah man, i'll try makin it smaller... but as far as running goes.. he doesn't really run yet.. he's not leash trained yet... i do play with him and get him moving a lot at luch though. normally about 20 minutes of play time at lunch that for sure wears him down.
play some fetch with him ..
NY STAY HIGH !!!
he'll play a little fetch, but he's still a pup.. and has a bit of ADD lol.
hahaha sometimes my dogs do that also ..
theyll eat then play with the toys and chew da bone then play with the toys its funny ..

shoot! i tried making the cage smaller thing.. and it worked... i just stuck a boogie board in there and seperated the cage in two sections.... he didn't pee a drop!
You need to get a divider for that cage, cut it off so that he has enough room in it to turn around and get comfy all sprawled out, but not so big that he can pee in one corner and sleep in the other. Effectively this is what he's doing. You want him to learn that his crate is his home, because puppies in general won't pee where they sleep, so they try and hold their bladder as much as possible.Originally Posted by Killer
A good rule of thumb is divide the # of weeks they are in half, and that's how long they can hold their bladder in hours, ie 8 weeks old = 4 hours. Be sure any time he drinks or eats to take him out 10-15 minutes afterwards, and try to go to the same place every time. Puppies like to pee where other dogs have peed and pooped. It sounds like he's doing good so far, but you may have to set the alarm to wake up in the middle of the night to take him potty. It's rough, but get through those first couple weeks and he'll be able to hold it through the night.
As for feeding, make sure you get him a good quality food (none of that supermarket bullshit), either Neutro Ultra or something similar. He'll get more nutrition out of the same amount of food. Feed him a couple times a day via the recommended amount split up into 3 meals. Once he gets a bit older you can adjust it and knock it down to 2 times a day.

Dude to be completely honest.. it depends on the food you are feeding him... Each food requires a different amount of food per size of dog because of the nutriants in the food...

yeah, as stated.. i divided the cage and it worked. now i've got to ween him from me... he needs to learn that i'm not gonna come to him every time he yelps... which is hard to do, cause he's with me at work all day so i have to give in somewhat to make him quiet... and i live in an apt so i can't have him barkin all night there either.
i've got him on beneful right now. a couple of vets recomended it. his gas is awful though.. his stomach isn't use to the change quite yet...
Beneful is shitty ass food.. I dont know what vet recommended it to you.. but I sure as hell wouldnt let that touch my dogs mouth..

Honestly Im not too knowledgeable about the vets in marietta.. I used to work at the banfield in kennesaw and I would NEVER recommend anyone to go there.. I know some of the vets that work at cobb emergency.. because I used to work with them.. Ask Val where she goes.. I just went to a class about a month ago with some of the best doctors in the country about client awareness about puppys.. their growing cycle food and all that.. and it was VERY informtaive.. I even learned stuff about my dog.. Believe me once you work at vet.. your whole perception of owning a dog changes..

I go to Jones Bridge Animal Hospital in Alpharetta, btw. The vets there are amazing. Yoshi had to have surgery on his leg last year and they figured out that he broke his hip immediately, and my vet actually canceled his vacation so he could do surgery on him the next day instead of making him wait a week in pain. He said his wife and kids would understand, but Yoshi wouldn't. He had the whole ball of his hip joint cut away and reconstructed with the ligaments and muscles of his hip and a year later you wouldn't even know. The only tell-tale is that his scar shows through his fur when he's shedding. He runs and plays like nothing ever happened.
I've been going there for over 15 years when we moved to Alpharetta. My fiance Tray takes his dog to them as well and when they found out we were dating they were so excited LOL. He had to put his dog down and they were so kind there, they even made a plaster cast of Sandy's foot to send to his family as a keepsake.
Anyway, back to food. The only food I'd recommend that isn't at a specialty shop is Nutro Ultra - read the label and compare it to the supermarket brands. One of my dogs has allergies to wheat products, and every food I've tried makes him break out and scratch horribly, but on Nutro he's fine - there's no wheat filler, or corn filler in it. He did fine on a few other brands that were from the specialty dog food shop, but they were too rich for Yoshi and gave him digestion problems. Nutro Ultra they're both fine, it's a good mix between the two. Plus you can get it at Petsmart, which is a plus. If you want REALLY good food go to Red Bandana and see what they have there.

Thats what I feed Misha.. we had a nutro person come out to the vet and actually brought all the ingredients in a bag of nutro.. All natural and it was awesome.. IT really helps when you can use the food and offer it to clients.. I would never tell anyone to use anything I havnt used on my own pets.. I feed my dog nutro high energy.. She is very active and needs something with the nutriants to mantain her weight with how much energy she burns off.. Believe me I know alot of tricks of the trade..

1. Meat by-products: Pet grade meat by-products consist of organs and parts either not desired, or condemned, for human consumption. This can include bones, blood, intestines, lungs, ligaments, heads, feet, and feathers.
2. Corn: Corn products are difficult for dogs to digest.
3. Food Fragments: Lower cost by-products of another food manufacturing process. Examples include wheat bran and brewer's rice (a waste product of the alcohol industry).
4.Meat and bone meal: "Meat and bone meal" and "beef and bone meal" are inexpensive sources of animal protein. The protein in a meal containing a large amount of bone may be poorly digestible and fail to provide adequate nutrition.
5.Animal Fat: Animal fat is a "generic" fat source that is most often made up of rendered animal fat, restaurant grease, or other oils too rancid or deemed inedible for humans. Look for a named fat source, such as poultry or chicken fat, that is naturally preserved.
6.Chemical Preservatives: Chemical preservatives include butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), propyl gallate, propylene glycol (also used as a less-toxic version of automotive antifreeze), and ethoxyquin. BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin are potentially cancer-causing agents. The long term build-up of these chemicals (that may be eaten every day for the life of your pet!) have not been thouroughly studied and may ultimately be harmful.
7.Sweeteners: Sweeteners such as corn syrup, sugar, and cane mallases are usually added to lower quality foods to increase their appeal. Dietary sugars can aggrevate health problems, including diabetes.
8.Beef Tallow: A low quality fat product.

yeah i'm gonna grab a bag tonight... but, i know a sudden switch in food is not good for there stomachs... and i also know that the beneful is making him bloaty too... so?? do i still mixt them or just flat out switch it???
thats weird cause my dogs arent bloating from beneful and they love the food ..

those are the people who just want dogs just because and not treat them as family members i feel sorry for the animals ..Originally Posted by The Ren

I'd gradually switch him over a few days. Start with 1/4 nutro, 3/4 beneful for a day or two, then half and half, then 3/4 beneful, 1/4 nutro, then full nutro. That gives his tummy some time to get used to the new food. If you notice him having the runs or getting constipated, add a spoonful/half spoonful of canned pumpkin to his food. For whatever reason canned pumpkin (plain pumpkin NOT the premade pumpkin pie mix) will clear up the runs, and help soften hard stools. Plus my dogs love it.Originally Posted by Killer
My doggie Yoshi had BAD gas and the runs on his old food, but once I switched over fully it took a few days for the old food to get out of his system and his tummy settled down after that.
Steve-O - they might like the food and do fine on it, but probably on a better food you'd notice a difference. Their coats will look better, teeth, etc. In the long run they'll be healthier because they're getting more nutrition out of their food.
Ren - That's definitely impressive. Even the smell of Nutro smells good, not like nasty dried dog food. I'd like to see some of those companies bringing in bags full of chicken guts, necks, feet and mystery animal fat, LOL.

thats what i figured cause at 1st i was feeding them IAMs then that whole issue about them and i switched them to beneful and now im hearing beneful sucks .. so im gunna end up getting the nutro ..Originally Posted by Dragonfly5338

In general, you shouldn't need any sort of suppliments unless the dog looks like he's missing something in his diet, ie, low energy, coat isn't shiney, skin is itchy, etc. Your best bet is to have your dogs getting all their nutrition in their diet, as it's easy to overdo it with suppliments and end up possibly harming your dog, especially with growing dogs.Originally Posted by SteveO
The only suppliment I give my dogs is human-grade fish oil, since most commercial dog foods have supplimented Omega 6 oils (from seeds), but lack Omega 3 (from cold water fish). It helps with any sort of allergies, itchy skin, bones and joints, etc. Plus my dogs love to lick it out of a spoon, haha.
If you want to increase muscle mass, be sure they're getting enough protein in their diet (which would be taken care of with a higher quality food) and be sure to exersise them regularly. Be careful when they're young and their joints are still forming, however. Just like people who over do it with steriods and the like to be bigger than nature intended them to be, the same goes for dogs. He'll be in the best shape he can be in for his frame and the most healthy if you feed him a balanced diet and make sure he's in good shape.![]()
