    Default Setting permissions....

I have a XP Pro server that holds our installs. I need to set the permission for everyone to be able to see the folder and files from there Laptops, but need admin permission to install the software. So I want it to come up and ask them when they click on the folder for a username/password. I have gone completely blank on this..I know I have did it before to..Any ideas...

You have to turn off simple file sharing, then when you go to properties you should see a security tab (this is not the same as "sharing and security", if you see this you need to disable simple file sharing). There you can choose who has acess to it the folder, and what they can do with the folder and it's contents.

    alright atif:

right click > properties > security > add "everyone" as a user

give them "read/list folder" rights only; that should make them login

also if you are using active directory or even if not i believe you can set access per user connected to your network the same way
