So i got to lunch w/ my mom who isn't feeling well and our waiter, who seems alittle wack to begin with, notices her not feeling well says, "i pray and go to church every week".... i'm like

ummm ok. this has always baffeled me... :confused: is saying this to complete strangers supposed to make them feel comfortable? really i don't get it. i don't walk up to people and say "i worship the devil on a daily basis... would you like fries w/ that?" i find it funny that people go ahead and assume you are christian or that you yourself pray or that you really even care....

some may be reading this thinking I JUST HATE CHRISTIANS... well guess what i don't. i just hate people who feel a need to publish to the world in every instance possible that they are a good person b/c they go to church/pray. actions speak louder than words, STFU and just take my order.

I agree. Why can't people who "dont believe" just leave it at that? Why do they feel the need to convince others why they shouldn't believe either?

The "pushy" or "forward" nature is not something that afflicts the "christian" types alone. That might be the one you notice most or bugs you, which I do understand.
It annoys me too.
There are many who immediately begin chatting up their intrests whether or not one is even slightly interested or not. One of my relatives does this with the weather. I am thinking, geeze shut up already, I can see its partly cloudy.

Another aspect of this behaviour among Bible thumpers is I think brought about by the misconceptions concerning being a 'witness'. Like the dude that stands in front the Braves game or rock concert and screams Biblical teachings mixed with nonsense.
Some have the notion that this is what the Bible is refering to when it makes reference to being a witness for Christ/truth etc. Unfortunately theyve missed the boat on that one. The witness is SUPPOSED to be HOW you treat people, NOT preaching at them or dragging them into your religion.

Some are just showing genuine concern although perhaps not in the best way.

Then too some people are just oblivious.

Just because you did not say it does not mean that you THOUGHT of it. Hate is often not impulsive. It is an action due to one's own formulated thought, opinion and judgement. The simple reason you thought about it and felt the need to even post an entire thread about it, implies that it DID and DOES bother you. What I actually think is that he was being compassionate. Was it a bit suggestive maybe? Absolutely. But it was not meant to offend you.

Let me say a couple of things in this case:

1. Extremism in any form is generally a bad thing. The religious people out there who think that it is their mission to convert the world are as bad as those people who make it their mission to destroy the religion of others.

2. Another problem in most cases is that it is impossible to have a frank discussion of ideas on religion with people. Most people simply believe in the religion or lack thereof that they were brought up with. A vast majority of these people have never gone out exploring things on their own, due to whatever fear they may have and thus have never been able to form an original idea of their own belief system. I think that the thing that people fear most is the fact that they may be wrong. Most people are so scared of even a hint of that possibility that they will not even address an argument about it. Combine this with the fact that they have nothing to back it up with and you get complete shutdown when simply trying to talk to another person.

3. Because of #2, it has become a complete taboo to speak about religion. Because people go completely into shutdown or get offended so quickly that it generally isn't worth the time or effort to try, which is sad, as any honest exchange of ideas is a good thing. Such exchanges are becoming rarer and rarer, as people have an incorrect belief that in America, they have the right to not be offended by anyone. To all of you out there that believe that, you can go fuck yourself (How's THAT for not being offended).

again saying "i'll pray for you", which really wouldn't of been much better is completely different than tell us "I GO TO CHURCH AND I PRAY EVERY SUNDAY"... shit if that wasn't him asking for a response i don't know what is.....

Maybe he was asking for a response, maybe he wasn't. It would be no different than someone seeing you sneeze and say "I take two doses of claritin every morning for allergies". You know I have no beef with you, and about your beliefs or lacks thereof. You should know I talk a lot of shit online too. Half my posts have hints of sarcasm in there. Discussions are good. It makes people think and can offer differen perspectives at times. Though things can get heated at times, but that is the price of admission for an opinion..

Let me say a couple of things in this case:

1. Extremism in any form is generally a bad thing. The religious people out there who think that it is their mission to convert the world are as bad as those people who make it their mission to destroy the religion of others.

2. Another problem in most cases is that it is impossible to have a frank discussion of ideas on religion with people. Most people simply believe in the religion or lack thereof that they were brought up with. A vast majority of these people have never gone out exploring things on their own, due to whatever fear they may have and thus have never been able to form an original idea of their own belief system. I think that the thing that people fear most is the fact that they may be wrong. Most people are so scared of even a hint of that possibility that they will not even address an argument about it. Combine this with the fact that they have nothing to back it up with and you get complete shutdown when simply trying to talk to another person.

3. Because of #2, it has become a complete taboo to speak about religion. Because people go completely into shutdown or get offended so quickly that it generally isn't worth the time or effort to try, which is sad, as any honest exchange of ideas is a good thing. Such exchanges are becoming rarer and rarer, as people have an incorrect belief that in America, they have the right to not be offended by anyone. To all of you out there that believe that, you can go fuck yourself (How's THAT for not being offended).

I vouch for Paul being the same butt lick in real life as he is online.....JP. Paul is opinionated like many of us. He knows I don't agree with him on lots of things. I do agree with his viewpoints sometimes too. He's not a bad person, just a free thinker. That's good and healthy, most of the time.

With that said, I think he was a little quick to rush to judgement considering that it was probably very benign statement that was being made. As thick of skin as I know he has, I'm surprised that bothered him that much. I personally don't think it should have, considering all the comments everyone must endure in each day we don't necessarily agree with.

I also agree with Vern and Jesse in that this really should not be a PC issue. It seems like people are asked all the time to "grow a thicker skin" when it comes to talking about things, yet when it's about something they don't agree with it suddenly is OK to lash out. It's human nature, but it's also wrong. If the left asks the right to be more tolerant, then it stands to reason that both sides should abide by that (not just one).

I have what might be a different view of those who sometimes "lash out" at the things of Christ or the Bible. I see that as evidence of goodness within that person or persons. The war between good and evil is fought within each person. Concience is sometimes at work and that is a good thing. If a person has NO response to anything of God that could be far worse in my view. Not judging anyone specific, just speaking in general.

i agree with leading by example...

when i was a freshman in college, there was this christian cat that lived across the hall from me. he was real cool, real mellow...just seemed to have it all together. and i knew him for months before the subject of religion even came up. but just by the way he carried himself - no cursing, no excessive partying, etc - it just made me curious as to what was his motivation/inspiration...

one day the subject of religion came up, he told me he was a christian, and that started a series of discussions, lol. but to me...dude was probably the best example i have seen of how a christian is supposed to live. he didn't make a big spectacle of his beliefs, but lived his life in accordance with the Bible and it definitely shined through. i think that attracts folks a lot more than the Bible thumping...
