I have a cat, but I only got him 'cause I couldn't have a dog in the apartment I was living in at the time. Now that I got him tho, I have totally changed my opinion on cats, and I've owned both a cat and several dogs now.
Cats are independent, like to chill and, if properly trained, can do a lot of the things dogs do (Mine fetches, will walk on a leash, and will scratch the hell out of you if you come at me in an aggresive way). Cats are leaders, and they always let you know that they could do just fine without you, yet they appreciate whatever you do for them. They're like that friend that you hang out with every now and then, but they have their own shit going on.
Dogs on the other hand, are totally dependent. They are like the friend that never has anything to do and is always calling you to do something. Dogs are more of a lifestyle choice IMO. Once you get a dog, you better get ready to take him for walks, take him to poop, give him baths, etc...Same time tho, they will be your true friend forever if you just care for them.
Guess it's all a matter of preference and what you're looking for in a pet.
Just some quick thoughts from having had both... I'm sure others probably have other ideas.
