Basically, it's a disease where, over time, all your muscles turn into bone. The oldest man with the disease is in his 50s and is as stiff as a board from head to toe because almost all of his main muscles have turned into bone. It's a genetic mutation that makes it so over time your connective tissues all turn into bone. If there is any trauma (like a bruise, a broken bone, a sprain) then the area becomes enflamed and any damaged tissue eventually will turn into bone. This also means that surgery cannot be used to remove the bone growths because they will just respond to the trauma by growing even more. People living with the disease eventually become so immobile that they can't move any part of their body.
