    Default Question for Athiests

Just wondering what a person goes through in life to make them an Athiest? I'm curious what the logic is behind that.. I'm not very religious so I am not saying you should not believe what you do.

my guess(for some) pesemestic, anti-establishment/churches person. who has had something so terriable happen to them that they can't believe in a God/Budda/whatever letting it happen. after all why would a "loving God" let bad things happen to good people.

I appreciate the response Tracy I forgot there was another thread on this, I just always assumed there is this feeling of emptyness if you do not believe in a higher power, like what is the point of being here?

Yeah for some maybe not me. I use to go to church all the time when i was a kid. And nothing really terriable has happen to me, I lost family members like everyone else, but thats life. I do question yeah, if there was a god why does so much fucked up shit happen it the world. But I feel strongly about the way I do because of one simply fact! Life after Death since I dont believe in any kinda of afterlife, It scares the shit out of me knowing/feeling that all we do in life leads to nothing. And if I sit down and think about it for to long I will honestly start to cry, so I dont really think about it that much and just try to make the best of my life. I really feel that people believe in some kinda god and or afterlife, to look foward to something when they die, to make them feel like this life they had was not worthless. I do believe it the 10 Commandments, but only as a guide line of rule that as people we should go by.

I've already been thru this faith talk before in that other thread. But just read on and you'll see where I'm comming from. There's more to it for me than I can type. But I'm not empty. I'm fine with my beliefs. No offense, but why do people who believe in god feel that people who don't are empty and why do they always ask. I don't go around to the churches and ask why do you all believe. You are so gay for having "faith" in something that you will never physically see or know for sure. I think it should be left alone. If "God" wants everyone to believe, I'm sure he'll figure out a way to make it happen. Why should I believ you???

    I get you.

kinda the oppsite of what you're sayin'= it seems to me that people who have no faith feel the need to put down and try and belittle theose who do.
I'm not saying you do that; just making an observation.

I wasn't belittling anyone. That wasn't my intention. If it was taken that way, I apologize. I would never put down anyone's faith or call it gay. I was just making an example. Both sides of the fence have people that do things to generalize their beliefs. I constantly have people ask me why I don't "believe" (when in fact I do. It's just not the same way you do, per say). I feel that Jesus was a person. That he was the son of God the same way you and I are the children of god. I believe in A "god"..how else did we get here. I think that things in the bible prolly happened to a certain extent, but how would we know...it's been translated over eons of time by eons of people. I don't feel like I need to go to church or choos a "religion" to be loved by god. I feel that one day when the time comes and I am educated enough on several different faith's, I will choose one...but I don't feel that it is a necessity to do so. The general idea of all religions is to be a good person. The know the difference between right and wrong. I am a good person and I know the diffenernce between right and wrong and I don't feel that I will go to hell for not choosing a faith.

It's not that you or whoever is actually saying that I or we are wrong, but the question kind of implies it IMO. If you believe, then fine. Go on with it. What is it with the need to know why I or we don't????

Yeah, Its what WE believe, and what we believe is not hurting you, until someone starts pushing wht they believe on you to make you believe or not believe then it becomes a problem.

People Tell me just Read the Bible and It will change you, No It will not change me I've read it many times over. I see it like A Doc.Suess Book, just a book to read.!

Most of the time it is not to put you down or to scare you with fire and brimstone stories. Most of the time it is just curiosity on why you do not believe.

I would have asked you the same questions. Maybe you will give me plenty of good points. Maybe you could learn plenty of good points too.

I don't think you should take offense when people ask you why you do not believe. At least not until they try to "push" you to convert or something. You are free to make your own choices.

I think both sides have extremists, and both sides should be a bit more tolerant about each other's opinions. It is possible to co-exist.

I hear ya and I'm just generalizing with most of what I have said. I don't really get offended. I'm pretty good at making my point. I understand the curiosity. I just don;t understand the judgement that comes with it most of the time.

This kind of speculation is wierd to me...but I guess I understand the logic. I just want people to know that bad things happen to every single person. They did happen to me. That's not why I don't believe the same way "you" believe. I believe in something that I made up. Something that makes sense for me. I don't even know that you could label me as athiest....I don't think I am.

    no you're wrong
i dont believe in a god, and it has nothing to do with bad things that happen
you should ask the same question to yourself, why do you believe in a god?

How is it going to feel when you die.. and theres nothing to go to? I believe that if there is a god, that is almighty and loving as alot profess, he (or she) would make themselves evident to me. Ive not had any such event in my life. I however wont falsley make myself believe in a god that doesnt exist to try and convince myself i wont go to hell. Is the primary reason for loving your god is to not go to hell? If he is so all knowing, dont you think he knows your not genuine and send you to hell anyway? Comments like yours are one of the primary reasons im glad athiest. Save your scare tactic for someone else.

In the end just like the bible says every tongue will confess and everyone will believe in God.!! But God gives people a brain to make their own decisions...it is that person decision as a human to follow his will for your life...And he lets everything happen for a reason...I know I've went through alot in my life...and when things happen I might not understand then...but down the road i could see why whatever happened...I've also seen to many times with family members when their sick and the doctors would come in and say there is nothing else to do...and them pull through...For me it is hard not to believe...

atheist: Atheism is the state either of being without theistic beliefs, or of actively disbelieving in the existence of deities. In antiquity, Epicureanism incorporated aspects of atheism, but it disappeared from the philosophy of the Greek and Roman traditions as Christianity gained influence

atheist: one who believes that there is no God

atheist: A person whose worldview embraces Atheism [noun] [OW]. The natural condition of all humans at birth and prior to indoctrination in or self-invention of Theism. Atheists claim there is no proof for God[s]. "Strong" Atheists claim God does not exist. "Weak" Atheists do not deny the possibility of God[s], or that proof might eventually be discovered. Athiest and Athesit are Fundie synonyms of Atheist [SD]. The word Atheism [CE] derives from the Greek atheos, a = without, theos = God.

    __________________________________________________ __________________

agnostic: An Agnostic [1] [noun] [OW] embraces a worldview in which the existence of deity is unknown or unknowable. Derives from the Greek agnostos, a = without, gnostos = known or knowledge. "Agnostic[ism] [CE] was coined by Professor TH Huxley in 1869 to describe the mental attitude of one who regarded as futile all attempts to know the reality corresponding to our ultimate scientific, philosophic, and religious ideas."

agnostic: one who believes that the evidence for and against the existence of God is inconclusive. (agnosticism)

agnostic: One who holds the theory that God is unknown or unknowable

agnostic: Someone who claims that they do not know or are unable to know whether God exists.

    __________________________________________________ ______________________

which definitions do you want to use?

if you really feel you're atheist, that means you acknowledge the fact that god exists & you renounce god...

if you agnostic, then that means you accept the faith exists but you don't follow one faith...

so in essence, both terms have to acknowlege that a god/deity exists...
what if you don't acknowledge that a god/deity exists? then what does that make you???

Well my husband is atheist and I am a christian. I cannot speak for him on the reason he is atheist, all I know is that it doesnt have an impact on our relationship or our children. I go to church EVERY Sunday and take the kids with me. Hubby says when kids have parts in a play or what not then he will come to see the kids. I did have to lie to my Grandfather when we got married cause Grandpa did the ceremony, and if he knew he was atheist he wouldnt have done the ceremony.

Here is how i became an athiest. As i was growing up i never really went to church. when i hit middle school i attended a church camp where I learned more about god and jesus for a few years. once i got to high school and started studying science i was over taken by it. It made more sense to me i guess. As an athiest i don't push it upon other people, and i hope to get the same respect from them. I figure believe what you want, as of right now there isn't a right or a wrong, nothing has be "proven" to it's fullest extent. boy do i get pissy when ppl try to down how i am......

btw good job digging up an oldie lol

a person who frees himself of influence would definately undergo a "beleif" or religious change. what causes this "freeing"?.. for me it happened when i realized how much we as humans sugar coat shit to have everything seem like a pretty story of how shit came to be, that is when you start freeing yourself from it... now i have alot of knowledge i guess you could say.. about the church, and the religious systems.. the truth.. the past. and its what keeps my mentality solid

i dont need to apologize for the words im about to say.. for i dont care who i offend (im not talking directly to you tony.. im talking to everyone)...

fuck the bible , fuck churches, fuck the priests, fuck the pope, fuck your religion.. its all man made.

religion has forever seperated and divided, and religion has killed more people than any war, natural disaster, or accident.

I was doing some reading today and i stumbled across Plato's Allegory of the cave and it made me think of this thread again, and it made me think about my beliefs in general. How socrates is explaing the cave scenario to glucion is how i view religion. It's there as a way to cover up what is actually going on. the priests of the way back time were the puppeteers putting shadows on the wall making people think what the puppeteers wanted. The shadows are all the people are allowed to see because they are prisoners in that cave. I just believe that i am one of the prisoners that had the nerve to let go of the chains and look to see what was actually there and what was making the shadows on the wall.

YES!!!! This is the exact same way I feel but some people need a crutch like religion or drugs to make it through the day because they don't know how to handle life.
