    Default Gun Jam....HELP!!

So My father in law bought a cobra patriot 9mm for like $300. Its a subcompact that he has been using as his carrier for like 6 months now. So he has been relying on this gun to save his life if needed. He had never fired it before, so I took him with me Sunday, when I went to shoot. First time he ever fired the gun it jammed. So we cleared the chamber, put another one in it and it jammed again. The p.o.s. jammed every single time the entire time we were out there. The gun fires, just jams. The slide is also very stiff, a real pain in the ass to pull back. I also noticed a tiny alan screw that appears to be missing on the slide, between the rear sights and the chamber. So we get home, clean the gun, put it back together, still a pain in the ass. So he called the manufacturer. They are doing nothing but giving him a runaround. I was just wondering how I could fix this problem I'm thinking its a low quality gun, but maybe there is a part in the gun I could replace with better quality part to fix the problem. Any advice would be appreciated, I know you guys know what you are doing and that is way more that I know lol. Thanx

Here is a pic of the gun

That is a bad situation. You could take it to a gunsmith, or try to sell it. A gun that does that, I would never want to depend my life on it.

My G/F has a KelTec 9mm, it's a cheap lil sub compact, but always is reliable. You can pick one of those up really cheap

my boy used to own a cobra .380. it jammed like crazy then one that fired and jammed got stuck in the chamber. so happens that the barrel cracked and it got stuck futher in. this happend the 2nd time we went to the range. they said send it back and they sent him a new one. look on youtube. i bought a bryco j22 thats very unreliable and there were ways on youtube to make it more reliable. mainly polishing feed ramp, polishing trigger for lighter pull, etc. also depends on the ammo!! do some research on that particular gun. there should be write ups or vids to make it a better gun.

i forgot to mention. oil the slide good and main reasons for jams are feed problems and extractors. polish the extractor and it might help it eject better?

Do a deep cleaning on it, esp. on the rails. Also ditto on polishing the extractor. Basically clean, polish, and oil/lube.

What the OP forgot is that it would misfire multiple times also. I fired it 2-3 times and it never fired the bullet, just clicked. After it does fire it jams the spent cartridge in the ejector. The slide being hard to pull could be fixed, either a good oiling or maybe take to the gunsmith. My he should carry his Ruger until he gets another sub compact, show him that SR9C I was looking at or the new Taurus 709 Slim.

Exactly. I'd ask for a refund, or sell the new one they send him.

    Look into these.

For that price range I'd stick with a Kel-Tec PF-9. Early models were crap, but that was 2007. I just got done doing a ton of research on tiny 9mm pistols and I narrowed the search down to the Kel-Tec and the Kahr Arms PM9. Ended up with the Kahr because a local shop had one mislabeled as a cheaper model - cheaper by $200.00!!!

Oh and I also own the smallest framed "baby Glock" and there is no comparison in terms of size with the Kahr or Kel-Tec - the Glock is a fat-ass brick compared to the Kahr and Kel-Tec.

A few quick pics of the Kahr vs. the "baby Glock" frame:

Biggest difference in my own personal pistols shown though is my "baby Glock" is chambered in a .45 GAP round - Kahr also offers the pistol seen in pics in a .45 ACP and the frame is barely longer/taller than the 9mm version seen here:

Just some food for thought as I have a sinking feeling you'll be looking for a replacement for that Cobra soon enough...
