Off duty and out of uniform and things can be much more relaxed. At my first duty station my roommates were the deck NCOs. While in the room it was first names and no rank, outside the room is was pure professional. While in uniform or really any time that you are told something that could be taken as an 'order' you need to be poessional. Getting too relaxed is a really bad habit and one that is very had to break. Just like when you are promoted ahead of a friend, you have to enforce the rank stucture, you have to enforce it now. Trust me when I say that it is hard enough to rip someones ass for not obeying customs and curtisies, it only makes it harder if they saw you doing the same things 2 months before.
