    Default Extraterrestials and Religion?

Do you think that an extraterrestrial presence is responsible for our world religions or mankind?

    Why?

Does this prove or disprove the existence of a transcendent God?

I don't think that an ET is responsible for our being here. I can't really say what I feel. It seems really weird to think that we just appeared from nothing (Big Bang), but I also don't know how much I can rely on some old story book, either.

I find it hard to believe that we are the only living things in existence, though. But I can't imagine they being responsible for our existence. Later, QD.

I asked a simlier question before in this thread.

Egyptians and the Mayans all have carvings of extraterrestrials or a strong similarity of "alien" type of creatures and machines on their pyramid walls. I'm sure flashing lights from unidentified flying objects had a strong impact in their perception on life and questioned a lot of their beliefs. Egyptian mythology speaks of many Gods with different purposes on life. They all played a role...

... meh, I would continue, but I am fucking starving! Lemme know what you think, Sport. Maybe I'll continue if you post up some interesting stuff.

I haven't heard much evidence to imply that aliens created humans or mankind. It seems more likely that humans developed on thier own (although I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility of panspermia). Even if I were to accept that aliens visited the ancient Mayans and Egyptians, that is a long way from being evidence that they created humans.

On religion, I would say its very unlikely religion came from anything but humans. After all, what better way to make people police themselves? Additionally, religion is constantly changing. Polytheism used to be more popular and now monotheism has become the norm. Even under those big headings there are a huge number of varieties and branches of each religion.

None of this proves nor disproves the existence of God in any way.

i don't believe that aliens are responsible for our creation personally, although i've seen it argued fairly convincingly...

aside from the civilizations mentioned, another one that has an interesting account of aliens being responsible for life on earth is the Sumerians. their creation account and flood story, for example, are said to be hundreds of years older than the Bible accounts but yet they are pretty similar. they believe that aliens from outer space came and grafted their DNA onto neanderthals or something like that, if I recall correctly...

if you really interested in the subject you should read Zecharia Sitchin's series of books starting with "The 12th Planet"

He talks about this subject in depth.

    I have.

Someone posted a video and it intrigued me so much that i ordered the book.

I am very similar in thought to him. That somehow our species has amnesia and our history is MUCH more than what we think. There are good reasons to believe that much of our mythology is based off of ancient civilizations that have almost been completely erased from our earth. I mean cities that were largely populated with all sorts of life from other planets that left here thousands of years ago and either have not returned or are unable to return for some reason.

This is interesting too, but you do realize that the Sumerians are in the Bible right? They are referred to in Genesis...they are the people who lived in Mesopotamia but i think they are called people of Shinar or Sinar or something like that. You could probably find it somewhere.

But I guess I find it hard to believe how many believers don't like the idea of an extra terrestrial presence. I mean, if you look in revelation of in the OT prophetic books you see all sorts of strange life.

People like to feel special and they take pride in thinking we are unique because of our intelligence. If there are other forms of intelligent life then they will feel less special which makes them sad. Same reason why Copernicus was so controversial.

It makes me feel more special. If there are other forms of life and we are spread so far apart or even inter dimensionally separated...for them to have visited is pretty cool to me. For them to keep visiting after seeing our crap is even cooler.

^ Many people feel that way also. I was just explaining the reasoning of many who are so quick to deny the possibility of alien life. Obviously many people feel differently though, myself included.

I didn't read this thread but according to Scientology, all religions came from brainwashing that was performed by the Alien Xenu. You learn this as an OT6 in Scientology....

You can't convince me otherwise that we or something like us was there long ago, stuff like this interest me, and its not because im trying to disprove religion but because i don't feel like anything taught is really the truth or makes any sense. I know in my lifetime the truth will probably not be figured out or be told, but one can always inch closer to figuring it out for themselves.

The thing that gets me is that we, humans, are pretty complex organisms. We can communicate with each other better than most species, we can build things to make our lives better; I have never seen a giraffe driving around in something that one its relatives designed and built. I just dont understand how enough random series of events could have happened to have brought us to this point without some sort of divine intervention. According to scientists the sun and solar system was formed by condensing matter into a ball of gas that ignited and was surrounded by planets, one of which is the ideal distance from the sun and has the correct proportion of elements for life to not only exist but to thrive. Then life was started by a bunch of amino acids that formed one cell organisms which eventialy became us? That is a lot of luck or coincindence. That is hard to believe that there wasnt an outside influence. Like someone said, who created the aliens? Might have been God. To answer the orignal question, if we are alone, there is a whole lot of wasted space out there.
