    Default AR Build or Buy

I'm going to be in the market for an AR in the next little bit and i wondered what you guys thought, should i build one or buy one?

Anyone have experience building one? I don't think I would have trouble going this way just wasn't sure how easy it is to get all the parts needed. Also if you have one what brand, caliber, etc.

get the bushmaster AR-15, thats what they give the private security forces over here in Iraq rather than M4s. Great weapons and very customizable!

Really depends on your budget. Since you can now find quality 2nd hand AR's on the net from $700 and up, I'd say you can buy one and be just fine. Now, if you have a baller budget and want the mack daddy, then you can buy one already made well into the thousands or build yourself one for about $1k.

Personally, I'd buy one first, customize it as I want, and then if I wanted to step up even further then build it.

I was talking with a DPMS rep the other day, from what i gathered there are only 3 manufactures of upper and lower receivers,(Not including the companies that build the high end custom ones) brands just use on of the three to build their guns.

There are only 3 companies who hold the patents/copyrights for building/manufacturing ar's.

I would recommend buying one second hand. You can pick up a dpms sportical for like $750 new.

Shoot alot of rounds through it to decide if its something you actually want to build further. I would recommend buying one already customized used and second hand. You will save ALOT of money.

here is the ar comparison chart. If u decide to buy one its a good resource to look at.

    http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?k...=5&output=html

Usually people build guns to have a weapon system that is built to thier exact needs, and for a fun learning experience, not necessarily to save money. KNowing what u need is the hard part, and it only comes from experience. So i tend to say buy one for now, train with it alot, try different slings, mounts, optics, grips, etc untill you like it; then maybe come back and build a custom rifle that will meet your exact needs.

Would hate to see you build one only to find out that it doesnt work with you correctly. Just a thought.

But if your ready for the fun and new knowledge I would say jump on in and build it. I would just start with a pretty stock AR and go from there after figuring out what needs improvement and what works with your body type, shooting style, and preferences.

buy the biggest you can afford to shoot. .223 is plentiful / 6.5 is nice / 6.8 is nice / 7.62 is expensive..

BULLSHIT! Heres the flag. Not possible with how cheap ar's are nowadays unless you buy everything used and for super cheap. If I can buy complete factory AR's to my door for around $600 I want to know where he can build them for $300!

Select rock river and dpms models during certain sales. Some of the lower end brands like delton, etc.. anytime of year.

    How reasonable does this sound?
    DPMS Upper(20" A3 standard forearm) for $469.99
DPMS Lower(A2 stock with internals) for $275.99
Combine the two for a $745.98 AR + cost of shipping and FFL fees
Am I missing something cause thats what it feels like? I'm not looking to build some tactical war machine just something to take to the range. If I feel like modifying it in the future it can be done buy opening a catolog or searching fourms.

Is that a complete upper with bolt and carrier group? Does that have any sights with it? Some sort of case to carry it in. Ammo. Cleaning equipment. Lube. Targets. Training.

    Anywho.. Just a start.

Has bolt and carrier group. Only missing rear sight(Flattop). I will get a rear sight for it, but I will probably use a red dot i have for the time being. The rest I already have; and the M16 was the rifle I used for my short term in the Marines, so I am familiar with its operation and maintenence. It just seems like a cheap price for what would essentially be a complete DPMS rifle that is BRAND NEW!

sounds pretty good to me. Thats a long arse barrel, but to each thier own. Make sure to post porn once you buy it

Should be able to add a rear BUIS for pretty inexpensive.

Is the M16 standard issue in the Marines on deployment?

wanted the 20" just cause it reminded me of my old service rifle. In boot camp we were issed the A2 but the A3 was the rifle being issued to Infantry. This was 4 years ago for me. I did hear rumors at the time that an A4 was going to be issued??? Once everything is ordered and in line will post pics lol
