I was just wondering those of you that are enlisted. What Branch are you in. What is your job? Do you enjoy it? What are you views towards it. I ask this because even tho I scored really well on the ASVAB Practice test, because I have several traffic tickets on my record since I was 16, only one in the past three years btw, that I can not join. LOL funny how things work huh.

This is what I was told about three days ago when I went to the local armed forces recruiters offices for the Air Force, Marines, Army, and Navy. So that means, IF there was ever a draft, I can't be enlisted because of my driving record. Technically speaking....

the only thing is i don't see how half the fucking garbage gets to join when some of them have the IQ of a fucking stump. There is this kid i went to school with who has had i know at least three drug charges and dropped out in 10th grade and made the enlistment process.

btw i had a overall score of 92 on it. Now thats not the AFQT just a ASVAB practice test. which i believe i done pretty well. its not as hard as i thought it would be. i took a few pracitce test online to get the jist of it. I tell you tho, there are some things on there i haven't used since middle school. man i was like aw wtf i don't remember this shit. i was like damn i thought i'd never use this again.

Its because he enlisted before FY2009 probably. You could get retards and convicted felons in then. Now that FY2009 and now FY2010 is just around the corner its going to get harder and harder to come in. I am personally glad. Now I just wish we could kick out half of the dumbasses that are in now out.

Back on topic...USAF, F-16(but can work on any fighter) crewcheif, I have been doing it for 3 yrs. I honestly love it majority of the ppl constatly bitch about it(long-hours, back-breaking work) but I have accepted the fact that no matter what my job is there will always be downsides. I have/am deployed to Iraq twice, and been to Germany, Israel, Kuwait, Turkey, and Las Vegas.
As for your record, IDK, you can pretty much get waiver for anything besides a felony w/ the airforce. I had 3 speeding tickets and loss my liscence for 6 months for one of them.
As for the branches go, I have worked along side army, navy and marines and AF by far has it the easiest. So unless you like sleeping in tents and taking showers once a week AF is the way too go...we got all the hot-chicks too. ..::Recuiter mode:OFF::..

my brother joined right out of high school at 18 and is still in the airforce and he is 40yrs old now. he has had a great life in the air force and is 100% happy with the decision.

i dunno. im into learning about weapons, tactical fighting, and things along that nature. but i also have a true love for technology. the thing about taking a shower once a week doesn't bother me lol. i mean i like to shower every morning when i get up but hey you can't always get what you want can you. i have lost my license twice but i have them now. like i said i only have one ticket on my record for the last three years and that should be falling off here soon. I'm kinda into the idea of learning about special ops and shit like that tho.

Air Force here as well, 2T2.. Air Transportation currently in Charleston, SC. As said before there is a waiver for everything, matter of fact one of my coworkers was forced into the Air Force or go to jail. If one recruiter turns you down go to another. I highly recommend the military but there is a lot of BS to deal with.

It is alot harder to actually get into an 18 series MOS in the ARMY. If you do not pass basic osut, airborne, sopc, sfas, or the q course they can cut you at any time. Once you sign the contract you will be in a school/learning environment for approx. 20-28 months depending on which sf mos you get. Could even be longer if they dont have school dates available. I was in airborne hold for 3 months waiting on a school date and almost as long waiting on as RIP date.
When I get done drinking and get some time (i.e. - 30 mins or so) i will type up a full post or pm me and i will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

another thing im wondering about is what kinda of education i could get that could be used once i get out, if i decide to get out after 4-8 years. like what could be used in the world, not just in the service. thats my only worry that ill be taught something that will have no use in the civil world.

Combat Communications, theres a guard unit in Warner Robins that does that

I dont think anyone else is going to tell you more than what has been said, the responses will be the same over and over.
I'll give a few closing responses based on the information you've posted so far.
My background. I enlisted in 2001 (before 9/11) as a private, 31U (signal support systems specialist) in the army. Did that for four years till I was a Sargent and then decided to get my Commission. I am now a 2LT in the Infantry, but will be going back to the Signal Corp once I'm a CAPT.
Driving record can be a show stopper, especially if you have unresolved tickets and sentencing. It a flag for getting a security clearance, which by the sounds of things is going to be a prerequisite for the kind of job you want. Bottom line, in order to get the necessary security clearance and be employable, you need to resolve your tickets.
Believe it or not, the desirable jobs in the military require a security clearance, so yeas this is important.
When applying for a security clearance, they look at EVERYTHING, including traffic. What they are ultimately looking for is to make sure you are not a felon, you don't associate with felons, you don't partake in high risk behavior, and you have your personal affairs in order to include your finances and driving record. Another big show stopper is TOO MUCH DEBT. Too much of a liability.
Special ops is not easy to get into, especially since there is a long line in front of you. Plus, there is a average 50% FAILURE rate once you get there. It is extremely demanding and is competitive to get into. Many people have to fight just to get a chance to go through the training.
One week without a shower??? HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A shower will be an afterthought compared to the food and sleep you won't be getting.You'd probably have an easier time getting into Ranger School compared to the Special Forces Que Course, not that it isn't possible. Plus, as a Ranger, you'd be doing the things you seem to be wanting to do. Not for the meager, and not for the weak. It is 60 days of absolute hell, and it is this way on purpose. Believe it or not, it is worse than combat.
To recap, if you really want to get in, fix what they're telling you to fix. Resolve your tickets. If that means you have to wait a while because your license is suspended or what not, then go back once you've finished that out. Get all of your other affairs in order. I'm not saying you have other issues, as I don't know. If you do, then get them fixed. If you have something in your background you haven't revealed, like a felony or a DUI, your chances of getting in are almost non-existent and there's nothing that can be done. Pretty much, the days of being waivered in with that on your record, regardless of the circumstances, are done. Past all of this, there's not much more that can be added.

If you want in for the fun of it. Look into an infantry or spec ops type of job. If you want in for career training, look into aviation.
In the Army you can get a bit of both by going into aviation and being placed with a spec ops unit. The A/F you can do it by being pararescue.
Or you can go the smart route and go to the Marine Corps. You can enlist in aviation and go through all of the schools. When you get to your unit you can put in a request to try out for either Recon or SEALs. If you have the PT scores and the rifle scores you will get a chance to try out. Get through the tryout and pass through the background checks and interviews you will go to school.
i would like to do it for the experiences, training, fun, more than likely to make it a career. I don't have and felonies. just a few traffic tickets. I have no friends that are felons, i don't do drugs, just drink occasionally. i have my license and only have like 3 points that will be coming off very soon.

Yeah like it was said before Enlistments are getting tougher. We are also booting out more people. About every ten years or so we go through a purge in the Army.
I've been in for 13 years (active/reserve mix) currently on active duty and will probably make Major early next year.
There's something in those tickets that is throwing up the red flag. I think it takes seven years for a criminal (non-felony) act to be taken out of your record. Even then sometimes you have to hire a lawyer to get it cleared.
One last FYI...a lot of SF operators already have their Bachelors. Out of the estimated 20 or so Soldiers I have endorsed to attend selection only one has made it.
Don't give up. Get a print out of your DMV record and make sure it lines up with what happened in court. People sometimes make fat finger mistakes...who know they probably have you listed as a sex offender? (that's extreme but possible)

LOL! Yeah one of my Soldiers has a twin and they both have the same name spelled differently (jason vs jayson...IDKWTF his parents were thinking).
Anyways, one brother went AWOL (not the one in my unit) which resulted in my Soldier getting arrested one night for desertion. Had a good laugh when we picked him up.

I also talked to two guys last night that are cops. one for gainesville and the other for hall county. One retired from the marines the other from the air force. they both told me to get whatever position i was promised in writing or i would get fucked.

Some good words spoken here. Someone else posted there being about a 50% wash out / failure rate in selections. From start to finish its more like 85=90%. There are alot of people who get into the pipeline and decide its not for them. The SF lifestyle is alot more different than you would expect.

good luck to ya man and I hope you make the right decision. I'm in the Air Force delayed entry program, and I ship on December 15th as a Cryptologic Linguist. It takes time to get in, I first talked to a recruiter the first of March, had to sit on my ass all Summer waiting for a vision waiver.. and finally got my ship date about two weeks ago. It's worth it and you most definitely will get in if your willing to put forth the effort.
If I go, i already made up my mind. I want to go ahead and just stay active for four years. I figure fuck it. Stay where ever.

that is false for the army. i have a driving record that is longer than my high school and college transcripts and i still got in. as of right now, i have 4 weeks and 5 days till i leave for basic (October 13th).
when i started to talk to my recruiter i was on probation for a traffic ticket. paid my fines off, and started going thru all the paper work. worse part is MEPS. which if you get down to it, you will understand what i'm talking about. you will have to write down EVERY SINGLE TICKET or whatever you've gotten in front of the Liasons. not that bad, just time consuming. some of the tickets i've gotten have ranged from just simple seatbelt bullshit all the way to wreckless driving and a speeding 90/40 ticket. all my shit went thru and i'm good to go.
